Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Availability of Replacement Trailer Wheel for Dexstar 17-149 15x6JJ
Hey Steven, the correct replacement trailer wheel for the Dexstar 17-149 15x6JJ that you found on your wheel is our part number # AM20522. Do you need a tire too?

  • Can 15" x 6" Wheels Be Used to Replace 15" x 5" Wheels
Arlin, don't worry - those two wheels are virtually interchangeable. The 15" x 6" like # AM20522 is only ~1/2" wider than the 15" x 5" wheels like # AM20422 that you currently use, so the difference is negligible. If there is anything else I can help you with feel free to leave a comment below and I'd be happy to help!

  • Do You Have a 14" or 15" Wheel w/a 2.8" Pilot Hole?
Hey Richard. We do not have a rim that large with a 2.8" pilot hole. A 2.8" pilot hole will typically be found on wheels in the 8" to 10" range. All of our 14" or 15" trailer wheels like the item # AM20522 you were looking at are lug centric and are centered by the torque of the lug bolts. The pilot hole size is less important than that on vehicle wheels, which are hub centric and use the pilot hole to center the wheel. What kind of trailer do you have?

  • Availability of Replacement Dexstar 17-149 Trailer Wheel
We do indeed have the wheel you're looking for. Dexstar's part number is 017-149-1x, but the distributor we get the wheel from, Americana uses # AM20522 which is the number we also use. This is a US manufactured 15x6 white powder coated steel spoke trailer wheel with the typical pinstripes. The bolt pattern is 5 lug on a 4-1/2 inch bolt circle with a 3.19 inch pilot diameter. The # AM20443 you looked at is a mini mod style, and is a little narrower and a different style than what you...

  • Will a 225/75R15 Trailer Tire Fit a 15" x 5" Trailer Wheel
In order to mount a 225/75-15 trailer tire you'll want to go with a 15" diameter x 6" wide wheel. If you have a 15" diameter x 5" wide wheel you'll want to go with a 205/75-15 trailer tire. • Upgrading from a 14" to a 15" Rim on my 2003 Casita
Upgrading rim size is a very common practice that we do all of the time. For instance the Dexstar Steel Spoke Trailer Wheel part # AM20522 is a very common trailer rim. It uses the 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern which is common and is 15" in diameter. I was unable to confirm the tire size that originally came on your 2003 Casita and also the bolt pattern to be able to confirm these for you. If you will please give me your tire size I will find a good fit. If you are unsure of your bolt pattern...

  • Need 15 Inch Rim With Positive Offset to Decrease Trailer Width
You'd need to find a wheel with a positive offset, which would move the tire closer to the trailer. If your trailer has a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern (see linked FAQ article) we offer a conventional wheel with a positive 1/2 inch offset, part # AM20504. This wheel would decrease the width of your trailer by 1 inch. I might be able to find a wheel with a slightly larger offset, but I'd need to know your wheel bolt pattern. If you'd care to reply directly to this email with that information,...

  • Recommended Aluminum 15 x 6 Trailer Wheel With 2800lb Load Rating
I have a different option for you, but the highest rated 15" x 6" or 7" aluminum or steel wheels with the 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern have load rating of 2150 lbs. These would be like the aluminum wheels # AM22651, # AM97XR, # AM22651B or the steel Dexstar #AM20522. For a wheel with a load rating of at least 2800lbs you will need to go with a wheel that uses the 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern instead like the Aluminum Viking Series Valhalla Trailer Wheel - 15" x 6" - 6 on 5-1/2 - Silver Spoke...

  • Which Trailer Tires Fit on the 15 x 5 inch White Spoke Trailer Wheel and What is the Backspacing
The backspacing for the Dexstar Steel Spoke Trailer Wheel, # AM20422 is 3 inches, which provides zero inches offset. This means that the point where the wheel studs go through the wheel is centered in the 5 inch width of the wheel. A 5 inch wide wheel will measure approximately 6 inches overall width with the wheel lip. This wheel is designed for 15 inch trailer tires up to 205/75-15, like the Karrier Radial Trailer Tire # AM10244. If you wanted to go with a larger tire like the Karrier...

  • Availability of a 16 Inch Wheel with 5 on 4-1/2 Inch Bolt Pattern
We offer a 15 inch diameter by 6 inch wide white spoked wheel in a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern, part # AM20522, but none of our vendors offer a 16 inch wheel with that bolt pattern. Generally, 16 inch wheels are used on larger trailers that have heavier axles that use a different bolt pattern like 6 on 5-1/2 or 8 on 6-1/2.

Both these are our most price conscious wheels and have the 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern you are needing. We do have hubs for a 3,500lb axle with the 5 on 5" bolt pattern if you have a 3,500lb axle and want to retain your current wheels. We have Idler Hubs # AKIHUB-550-35-EZ-K and Drum Hubs # AKHD-550-35-EZ-K which fits the common 3,500lb axle. If you can...

  • What Type of Steel Trailer Wheel Accepts a Baby Moon Hubcap AM90086
The Americana Baby Moon Trailer Wheel Center Cap # AM90086 is intended for 13-, 14- and 15-inch conventional steel trailer wheels like # AM20504 that have three projections around their center, as shown in the linked photo. The cover's inside diameter of 9-1/4-inches matches up to the outsides of these projections for a snug snap-on fit. The cover will not work on spoke wheels with triangular cutouts like Dexstar Steel 8-Spoke Trailer Wheel # AM20522.

  • Can 205/75-15 Trailer Tires Be Mounted on 15x6 Rims on Keystone Outback 23RS
I believe you're asking if you could mount a size 205/75-15 trailer tire, on a 15 inch wheel that is 6 inches wide. If so, the answer is yes! 205/75-15 trailer tires can use a 5, 5-1/2, 6, 6-1/2 inch wheel, so you're good to go. If you haven't picked out your tires, I highly recommend the Provider ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire # TTWTRTM2057515C. • How to Determine Wheel Bolt Pattern For 15 Inch Trailer Wheel
By other dimensions I assume you are referencing the wheel bolt pattern for your 15 inch trailer wheel, and I have added a link below to a help article on how to find the correct bolt pattern. For a 15 inch wheel you likely have either a 5 on 4-1/2" or 6 on 5-1/2" wheel bolt pattern. So for a 5 on 4-1/2" you could use something like the Dexstar Steel Spoke Trailer Wheel # AM20522 while for a 6 on 5-1/2" you could use the Vesper Steel Modular Trailer Wheel # TA25FR. It really just depends...

  • Recommended Tire Size for 15 x 5 Wheel
I have a solution for you, but the # AM20422 is a 15" x 5" wheel, which is going to be slightly too narrow for a 235/75/R15 tire. In order to fit a tire of that size you would need at least a 6" wide wheel like the # AM20522, but there may be some issues with using the tires you mentioned since they're designed for passenger vehicles and not a trailer. Typically, you won't want to use a tire with the P- prefix on it as those are designed for passenger tires and not for trailers. Trailer...

  • Recommended Tire and Wheel to Work with My Keystone Outback Travel Trailer
I recommend the BF Goodrich Commercial T/A tire LT235/75/R15/C as it will fit on a 15 x 6 wheel. These are typically traction tires and wouldn't be the best option for a travel trailer. The width of this BF Goodrich tire is 9.2 inches and 28.6 inches overall diameter. It has a max load of 1,985 pounds at 50 psi. On your travel trailer with 5 on 4-1/2 inch wheel bolt pattern and upgrading from your 205/75 R14, I recommend the Kenda radial tire # AM32468. It is a 225/75R/15C and has a maximum...

  • How is Trailer Wheel Width Measured
Wheel width is measured from bead seat to bead seat so you cannot accurately measure it without removing the tire first. Typically the overall width will be 1 inch greater than the internal width. So for Dexstar wheel # AM20522 the actual width is 6 inches but the overall would be closer to 7 inches. Fora 15 inch wheel that would be 6 inches wide overall, 5 inches on the inside, with the same bolt pattern use # AM20422.I have linked a video that shows our resident tire and wheel expert...

With that said there are two options, if you are set on the Karrier # AM10303 you would need to purchase two wheels like Dexstar 15"x6" in White # AM20522, Black # AM20545, or Silver # AM20537 which are powder coated steel, have the 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern you are looking for, and would work great with the Karrier # AM10303...

  • Determining Width of Trailer Rim
The only sure way to determine the width of the rim you currently have would be to pull the tire off of it and get a measurement. Your local tire shop should be able to do this for you for very little cost. If the wheel has spokes that would allow a tape measure or ruler to pass through, you could take the measurement from bead seat to bead seat, which would be the width of rim you need. I have provided a photo and a diagram showing the measurement you will need to take, but it will be...

  • What is the Capacity of 15 x 5 Inch Steel Trailer Wheel with 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern AM20443
Regardless how thick the metal is, wheel # AM20443 is rated for 2200 pounds at 50 psi. Even if the tires are rated higher than that you would still be limited to 2,200 pounds at 50 psi. Wheels tend to have 1/16 to 1/8 inch thick metal but the powder coating makes it difficult to get a true measurement. If you go up to a 15 x 6 inch wheel, # AM20522, it is rated for 2,050 lbs at 75 psi. This wheel will accept 205/75-15 tires and 225/75-15 tires.
