Question:
Hi, Im considering purchasing a small PUP camper to tow behind my 2016 Subaru outback 2.4 LTD. The camper currently has a Tekonsha Prodigy brake controller installed please see the attached photos. Since I need to add a hitch and wiring to my car, Im wondering what wiring adapter is correct? Also, if I decide not to go with this camper, would that same wiring work for other brake controllers that I may need to purchase separately and if so which? Thanks

In order to be able to use the Tekonsha Prodigy RF # TK94FR, or any other brake controller, on your 2016 Subaru Outback you will need to add a 7-way connection. In order to add a 7-way you will need to start with a 4-way.
For a 4-way, I recommend the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # C56040. This wiring harness plugs into the connection point in your rear cargo area so no cutting or splicing is required. Once this is installed you will be able to add your 7-way connection.
For the 7-way you need the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7. This kit comes with the adapter, wiring, and everything else you need in order to install a brake controller on your vehicle. The adapter has both a 4-way and 7-way connector so you will be able to use both depending on what you are towing.
If you're sure you will be getting this trailer, you could install the # ETBC7L instead of the # ETBC7. This only comes with the necessary parts for a brake controller like the Prodigy RF or Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller # C51180. If you think you will get the trailer with the Prodigy RF # TK94FR, or want to use the # C51180 for another trailer in the future, this would be fine. If you wanted a brake controller in the cab of your vehicle at some point you would need the # ETBC7.
Since you mentioned needing a hitch, I recommend the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98847. This is a Class III hitch with a 2" receiver and a matte black finish. If you need a ball mount, check out the etrailer Ball Mount Kit # 989900. This kit has two ball mounts, one with a 3/4" rise or 2" drop and the other with a 2-3/4" rise or 4" drop. It also comes with a 1-7/8" and 2" ball, as well as a ball mount bag to store everything in.
I have attached some review and installation videos for your reference.
