Question:
When is the armature surface out of tolerance we have some drums that the back of the lugs are just a 1/16th or less from showing

When it comes to checking the armature surface on your hub and drum assembly like the Dexter # 84556UC3 there is no specific measurement related to the back of the lugs that indicates wear. What you are looking for is grooves or discoloration and pitting. This would indicate that you need to replace your hub and drum assembly so your brake magnets work properly.
If you have a 3,500 lb axle with # L68149 inner and # L44649 outer bearings and need a 5 on 5 bolt pattern then the # 84556UC3 you looked at would be a great replacement option. If this is not the case I can help you find a replacement if you let me know what you currently have. I have also attached a link to all of our hub and drum assemblies for your reference.
