Recommended Flat Tow Components For 2004 Ford Excursion

Updated 02/03/2021 | Published 01/31/2021

Question:

Have an 04 Base Model 5.4 V*8 Excursion 4 Wheel drive. Can i tow it flat? If so, your best value base plate and 7k lb tow bar system including wiring on Excursion? No Brake components needed. Already have Roadmaster Falcon system mounted on our 2016 Fusion Hybrid we to. It is too light at 6k lb rating, unless you have an upgrade kit that would be better value? Thank You for your Expert assistance, have had excellent success over the years with your supplied components.

I would be happy to recommend the parts needed to flat tow your 2004 Ford Excursion 4WD with the 5.4L V8.

Starting with base plates I recommend the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BX2163 which is confirmed to fit your Excursion and will allow you to use the Blue Ox Avail Tow Bar # BX7420 which has a 10000lb weight rating which will give you comfort in knowing that the tow bar will have the strength to tow your vehicle with room to spare. Since the Avail includes safety cables, you will not need to purchase them separately.

Moving on to wiring I recommend the Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267 which will add a 6-way connector to the front of your vehicle and the included 7-way to 6-way cord will plug into the 7-way connector of your tow vehicle to power the lighting functions.

While you mentioned that you do not a supplemental braking system if you do not already have one I recommend adding one due to the weight of your vehicle. Using only your tow vehicles brakes will wear them out quickly and will increase the braking distance. An option like the Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR would be a great choice as it installs easily and since it gets completely removed when you are done flat towing it can be used in multiple vehicles.

Lastly you will more than likely need a high/low adapter to level your tow bar to your tow vehicle, so I have included a link to a helpful article that will walk you through how to measure for the correct adapter, and a link to all of our high/low adapters for you to take a look at.

Regarding can your vehicle be flat towed, while researching this I was able to find it appears it can as long as you disconnect the rear drive shaft and unlock the front hubs, but I recommend that you contact Ford and confirm this. You will also want to make sure your tow vehicle is rated to tow a vehicle as heavy as your Excursion.

I included videos for each of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
