Does Steering Wheel Of Dolly Towed Vehicle Need to Remain Unlocked
Updated 01/21/2021 | Published 01/20/2021 >
Question:
I have a 2019 Honda Fit. Do I have to do anything to the car to tow with a car dolly? I've been told to disable the steering wheel lock. Is that a requirement?

Expert Reply:
When towing a vehicle behind a motorhome using a tow dolly like the Demco # DM9713093 Kar Kaddy X you'd looked at, you'll want to leave the steering column locked. The tow dolly swivels, so it will track correctly behind the tow vehicle. This also applies if the dolly doesn't have a 'steer axle'.
All you'll need to do is hitch up the vehicle and dolly according to the instructions and plug in the 4-pin trailer connector.
The Kar Kaddy X is compatible with vehicles weighing up to 4800 lbs and a wheel track distance of between 42-78 inches, so the 2600 lb weight and 58 inch track distance of the 2019 Honda Fit would be compatible.
