We're getting closer to buying tires and I was comparing the max load of your recommendation to our current tires and the max load numbers are quite a bit off from each other. My current tires max load is 1520lbs and the recommended tires are only 990lbs. To me that seems problematic. Are there higher max load tires you could recommend?

For a 12 inch trailer wheel I would recommend the Taskmaster 4.80R12 Radial Trailer Tire part # TT48012C as it has a higher speed rating of 81 mph which is great for highway use and has plenty of weight capacity at 990 lbs per tire. It would only be slightly smaller in diameter than the size you have now but fits the same wheel.
