Recommended Replacement Trailer Tires Size 4.80-12 on Boat Trailer

Published 11/10/2015

Question:

I have a small boat trailer used to haul my 1000 lb boat back and forth to FL 1200 miles each way at speeds of 70mph, once a yr. Tires are Load Star 4.80-12. One is worn and needs replacement. Questions: 1. Should I replace both? The tread on the second is about 1/2 worn. 2. My spare is a Kings Tire 5.30-12. Should I get a second to match and put both on the trailer and use the other 4.80-12 as a spare? 3. Can I /should I up size? I have about 1.5-2inch of room under the fenders. Other suggestions? Thanks

It is recommended to replace both tires on the same axle at the same time. This is due to wear patterns on the tires.

You should always use tires of the same size, load range, and construction on a trailer. If you use tires that don't match, you could experience problems of overloading and overheating, which can lead to tire failure. I do not recommend using the size 5.30-12 tire on your trailer.

I do not recommend sizing up from the 4.80-12 size tires currently on your trailer. It is recommended that there be 3 inches of clearance between a tire and fender on a trailer. Since you already only have 1-1/2 to 2 inches of clearance, you will not want to use a larger tire like the 5.30-12. Size 4.80-12 tires have a overall diameter of 20.5 inches, while 5.30-12 size tires have an overall diameter of 21.9 inches. Using size 5.30-12 tires on your trailer will decrease the clearance between the fender and the tire by 0.7 inches, leaving you with only 0.75 - 1.30 inches of clearance.

The trailer tire I recommend is the Taskmaster Bias Trailer Tire 4.80-12 Load Range C # TTWSF48012C. Each tire has a maximum load rating of 990 pounds when the tire is at 90psi. These tires also have a speed rating of M, or 81mph.

I have attached a help article on frequently asked questions about trailer tires for you.
