Yes, a converter is needed for a 2011 Jeep Liberty because one the tail light circuits are on separate wires and they need to be combined for a trailer and two the factory tail light circuits are not sufficient to power the lights on a trailer as well as the lights on the vehicle. I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector part # 118554 which has one of the most durable converters on the market due to the potting which helps keeps the wires attached to the circuit board better.
In regards to the power wire, this will be the same for pretty much every kit and not something that you should have an issue with if installed properly. That said, if you use some wire loom like part # 7509-10 this will offer additional protection just be sure the wire is secure so it can't move and you avoid moving parts for the exhaust. I typically follow the brake lines as there is generally a panel to hide the wire behind.
