Removing and Replacing Spring Bar Retaining Clips of Curt Weight Distribution System

Published 08/15/2019

Question:

Hello, I need to replace the round bar retaining clips on my Curtis weight distribution hitch. The little flimsy metal clip seems insufficient to hold that heavy metal bar. Mine have actually fallen out on the road OMG! . So, I bought the parts to replace them, however Im not sure how to get the little pins out that hole the clips in place, as they dont screw in. It says to take a punch and punch then out, but if I do will the treaded pins work? Its the rusty little pin in the pic. thanks so much.

To remove the retaining clips # 17109 on a Curt weight distribution system with round bars you would first remove the bottom screws holding them on. Then you would push the clips up so the wider part of the hole can slip off the top pin.

The top pin fits into the groove in the spring bar when inserted into the head. If the pins are also being replaced pull out the old ones and then insert the new ones.

To install the clips you would reverse the above process. Check out the attached picture for more info.
