Question:
Hi, I have just purchased a used 6.4x12 single axle utility trailer with 5 on 5 15inch wheels. I am wanting to replace the hubs with your 5 on 5 pregreased hubs. I havent taken the old hubs off or apart yet because I am unsure of the axle weight rating. I have a Dexter axle with sn# D 5883696. I cant tell if this is a 3500 or 6000# axle because the label is faded. Will these hubs fit/work on either axle? Thanks

Helpful Expert Reply:
You can confirm the weight rating of your Dexter axle by removing one hub and pulling its bearings. The included photo shows how part numbers usually appear on bearings.
The specific bearings used will tell you the axle's weight rating. Just refer to the linked article that lists the bearings commonly used for various axle weight ratings. A new hub must use the same bearings as the original hub in order to fit on your spindles.
A 3500-lb axle commonly uses bearings # L68149 and # L44649 while a 6000-lb axle will use bearings # 25580 and # 15123.
The 5-on-5 hub/drum # AKHD-550-35-EZ-K is for 3500-lb axles and uses bearings # L68149 and # L44649. It will fit if your original hubs use these same bearings. This hub is not pre-greased so you will want a bearing packer like # ALL647646 and bearing grease # L11465.
If you want a pre-greased 3500-lb 5-on-5 idler hub that uses these same bearings you can use part # 84550UC1-EZ.
