Question:

Chrysler says towing a trailer is prohibited. They say nothing about a simple cargo carrier. towing a trailer would void the $8,000 warranty on the big hybrid battery. However, all I want to do is to attach my 500lb rated cargo carrier 2 inch on the back to the hitch. My thinking is that if I could find a class 1 hitch that is rated at pulling no more than say1,000 pounds and I did not install a light harness because I do not intend to pull any trailor I could maintain that I could’t Actually legally pull any trailer and really just use it for the cargo carrier. Can you find such a hitch for me? Thanks for any help you can give me.

I took a look in the owner's manual for your 2019 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid and saw where it said that towing a trailer is not permitted. However, it does not say that you cannot install a trailer hitch for a cargo carrier so you should not worry about voiding your warranty. You are also protected under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act which simply states that the manufacturer cannot void your warranty just because you installed an aftermarket part on your vehicle. The part would have to be the cause of the failure and they would have to prove that you used the vehicle incorrectly. The burden of proof would not be on you to prove that you didn't but rather them to prove that you did so you have nothing to worry about.

Therefore, I recommend using the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13383 (Class III) which has a 2" receiver tube opening and will not require any drilling to install on your vehicle as it uses predrilled holes in the frame rails. If you used the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C12180 (Class II) then you would need an adapter for your cargo carrier which would then cut your weight capacity in half so this is not what I recommend.

I have attached a sample install video for you as well though it is not on a Hybrid but will still be the same.
