Question:
Your notes on the C13081 hitch state to use stabilizer straps for non towing items? What is the purpose for that specifically? Is it because the hitch cannot physically handle any side loading versus the straight pull load a trailer would have? Thanks Greg

Expert Reply:
The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13081 which is a fit for your 2014 Jeep Compass as you mentioned recommends the use of the Curt Cam Buckle Stabilizing Strap part # 18050 for all non-towing accessories. The reason for the strap is to prevent movement of the accessory inside the trailer hitch as it can wear down the hitch over time and lead to a potential for failure. In my opinion, this is more of a warranty precaution than strength concern.
If you do not wish to use the stabilizing strap then you will want the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 75712 which does not require any such device. I have attached an install video of each hitch for you as well.
