Do You Need to Have the RF Controller for Blue Ox Patriot 2 & Patriot 3 Supplemental Braking Systems
Updated 08/17/2024 | Published 07/27/2023 >
Question:
I received the brake module used but dont have this monitor. Is this necessary for the brake to work? If so, how does the brake actually know when to activate? I know it is RF technology but how does it actually tell the towed vehicle when to brake? Based on speed? Couldnt find any videos explaining the actual way it functions.

While it is recommended to use the RF Controller for Blue Ox Patriot II or Patriot 3 Supplemental Braking Systems # BLU66CR, the systems can be used without it.
The Blue Ox Patriot II and Patriot 3 systems are inertia based braking systems. This means that the systems sense the motion and when it senses that the vehicle is slowing down it applies the brakes.
What you are missing out on if you do not use the RF controller is the manual override, ability to adjust the brake force from the RV and getting the operation feedback from the system in your RV.
