it gives directions that it will fit and plug into existing wiring harness, then it says not ???

The Curt T-Connector trailer wiring harness part # C55369 that you referenced does plug into existing wiring with the green connector opposite of the 4-way connector. I attached an install video for this kit for you to check out as well.
