Question:

Does the RM QDisconnect tow bar come in different lengths? I had a Subaru Outback with the RM hidden hitch tow bar setup. Kept everything but the base plate on the Subaru, want to now transfer everything on to a 1990 VW Vanagon which has 2 receiver base plates. I ordered reducers to fit 1 1/4 hidden hitches. I didnt get them yet, but feel the hitches might be too wide for the tow bar to match up. I know the hidden hitches are adjustable to a point, but the bar is not. Are there adjustable bar set ups?

There are adjustable width tow bars but I am not sure you have all the components you will need to flat tow the 1990 Volkswagen Vanagon. The first thing you are going to need are the base plates. The receiver base plates you mentioned do not sound like they are for tow bar use to flat tow a vehicle. For your Vanagon, you would need the Roadmaster Standard Base Plates, # 1208-1. These base plates provide a safe a secure attachment point for a compatible tow bar.

The most popular tow bar for standard base plates is the Falcon 2, # RM-520. This tow bar will fit the base plates listed above once they are installed on the vehicle. I have included a link to the installation details and a video for you to view.

You will also need a set of safety cables, a lighting solution, and supplemental braking. For safety cables, I recommend the coiled cables, # RM-643. The coiled design helps keep the cables from touching the ground.

For lighting, there are various options depending on your specific needs and how often you will be towing the vehicle. I have included a link to an FAQ article that covers the various lighting options.

Most states now require a supplemental braking system on the vehicle being towed. The easiest to set up and use is the Even Brake, # RM-9400. This is a proportional system that applies the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking reducing wear and tear on both vehicles.
