How big of a trailer can I pull

I took a look at the online owner's manual for your 2017 GMC Terrain. It states that the 2.4L L4 Engine model Terrain has a towing capacity of 1,500 pounds for trailers with brakes and 1,000 pounds for trailers without brakes. I do recommend verifying this in your copy of the owner's manual, as its possible that you have a slightly different model.
If you do not yet have a trailer hitch installed on the vehicle, I recommend the etrailer Class III # e98865. This custom-fit, Class III hitch will use existing holes in your Terrain's frame for a no-drill installation. I have attached an installation video on your 2017 model that you can use for reference.
For trailer wiring, I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118494 if you do not have the factory tow package. This custom harness will install by connecting directly to built-in ports located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side interior trim panels in the rear cargo area. Once plugged in, you will simply need to run the hot lead up to the Terrain's battery.

Lastly, in order to tow a trailer, you will need a ball mount and hitch ball. I have attached a great article that explains exactly how to determine the best ball mount for your application, along with a link that will take you to our available selection.
