For your 2016 Volvo XC90, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13233. This hitch receiver is estimated in the installation details I've attached to take a novice about 2 hours and a professional about an hour to install. It can be installed by you or by any mechanic you trust. We do not have installation locations we refer to, but can provide you with videos as well as instructions. I've attached a video on the same model year to assist.
If you will be using this for a bike rack or cargo carrier, Curt requires the stabilizer strap # 18050.
If you will be using the hitch receiver for towing, I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118683 for your trailer or accessory wiring. This harness plugs into your Volvo XC90's wiring harness, which is located inside your rear cargo area, behind the tail lights on both the driver's side and passenger's side. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead to the power cable stud on the driver's side and connect the wire using the ring terminal. Then insert the included 15-amp fuse into the fuse holder.
For a ball mount, I recommend the B&W Tow & Stow 2-Ball Mount # BWTS10035B which will give you the two hitch ball sizes that will work with trailers within your 5,000 lb towing capacity of your vehicle. It also has a nice stowable option to protect your shins when not in use and has a clean look. You may also be interested in a hitch lock like # e98882 to protect your ball mount or other accessories you've invested in.
