Question:

I have a 34 foot travel trailer now that weighs approximately 8000 pounds...looking at a fifth wheel that weighs approximately 10,000 pounds. Can my Tundra handle that kind of weight? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

In order to determine the maximum towing capacity of your 2016 Toyota Tundra you will need to find both the Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) and the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW). These ratings will be located on the information tag placed inside the driver's door jamb. If you subtract the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) from the (GCWR), that will give you the maximum Gross Trailer Weight (GTW) you can safely tow.

From my research, the most well equipped Tundra has a maximum towing capacity of 10,500 lbs. As long as you are within the maximum towing capacity range that your truck is equipped to handle, I recommend using the Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # RP30047 for 5-1/2' and 8' beds or the Reese 16K 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # RP30051 for 6-1/2' beds. You will also need a Sidewinder if you have the 5-1/2' bed. I have attached a review video of each hitch so you can check out some of their features. In order to install any of the above hitches you will also need a base rail set and for that I recommend the Reese Quick-Install Custom Base Rails and Installation Kit part # RP50084-58 which is custom fit for your Tundra that minimizes drilling and measuring.

Since you will be near or at the maximum towing capacity your truck is equipped to handle, I recommend installing a set of suspension enhancements such as the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System part # TTORTUN4. The Timbren springs will do an excellent job of helping to distribute the added weight of your 5th wheel trailer. You may also want to consider adding the Hopkins Endurance 5th Wheel/Gooseneck 90-Degree Wiring Harness part # 41157 for a convenient truck bed trailer connection point.
