Recommended Trailer Hitch and Weight Distribution System for 2004 Ford Crown Victoria

Updated 03/06/2025 | Published 01/08/2018

Question:

Please direct me to info on changing my stock 2004 Crown Vic to pull a large trailer and a loaded car with a total of about 4500 pounds. I understand a Police Interceptor would be better suited for this. Thank you

For your 2004 Ford Crown Victoria, the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # 13707 is a great option to get you started. Then you will need to get a weight distribution system like # FA92-00-0800 for your trailer to allow that weight to be carried by your hitch. You will not be able to carry more than 600 lbs total tongue weight which includes the loaded tongue weight of your trailer and any cargo behind the rear axle of your car. I recommend the Draw-Tite Hitch ball # 63840 for a 2-5/16 inch option for your trailer coupler and this weight distribution system. If you have a 2 inch trailer coupler, then you will want # A-90 instead.

The police interceptor versions have a different engine and transmission combination, which give them a higher towing capacity, however, this system will work well with your stock vehicle.

You will most likely also need a brake controller for a trailer of that size. I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 along with the # ETBC7 to give you the trailer connection you need for this to all function correctly together.

@PatH Hey Pat, the only way you'd tear up the transmission is if you towed over what your Crown Vic can handle which is 2,000 lbs. So with that said here's everything you'd need: - A trailer hitch for whenever you're ready - the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C12130, - A drawbar, the Curt Class II Drawbar # C45522 with a 2" ball # 19258, - A wiring harness, the Hopkins Active Tail Light Converter with Install Kit # 46255, & if you're towing a trailer with brakes, you're also going to need a 7-way # ETBC7 and a brake controller # 90195. Please feel free to let me know if there was anything else you need help with!
