Video Transcript for What to Know About the 2" Hitch Ball

Brad Hello, neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer, and today we're taking a look at the Draw-Tite two inch ball. Now this is a 3/4 inch diameter and the shank length is gonna be 1 9/16. This is gonna be a Class I and Class II ball, so it's gonna be great for towing some smaller trailers. Now this ball is a 3,500 gross trailer weight rating, and this is gonna be great for your Class I and II, so smaller cars and vehicles can be able to tow this, especially if you have an inch and 1/4 hitch. Now this can fit on ball mounts that are anywhere from 3/8 to 5/8 inch thick. Now this ball is rated at 3,500 pounds, which is gonna be great for a teardrop trailer just like this, but it's one part of many parts of towing components that you need to make sure is up to that number to make sure it's safe.

So not only should your ball match that weight, but also the ball mount as well as the hitch and the vehicle itself. So it's important to check all those numbers and take the lowest number of all those just to be safe. And that way you're not trying to tow something that's heavier than your components. So installation of the ball on the ball mount is obviously pretty simple. Now included with the ball is gonna be the nut as well as the split washer here.

And also you'll see these flat spots here on the top part here on the ball, and that's gonna be great. You can put a wrench there as you torque this to spec. Now you're gonna want to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for torque specs to make sure that this is tight enough, but also not too tight. And you're gonna need to use a torque wrench to achieve that. If you don't have a torque wrench, we have those here at etrailer.

You can also generally rent those in an auto parts store, but make sure that you torque this down properly and that way, you're towing safely. And this is steel construction, so it's obviously very strong. It also has a nice chrome finish, so this is gonna look really good for a long time. It pretty much won't scratch, it may get a little dings and dents, but overall, the lifetime of it, it's gonna look great. Now sometimes putting a little bit of grease on here when you're towing is also gonna prolong the life of this chrome looking good.

And that was a look at the Draw-Tite two inch ball, and that's with the 3/4 inch diameter by 1 9/16 shank..

Installation took longer than I expected but not due to etrailer parts quality. Without a helper ended up using scrap lumber to support the hitch under the car during installation. Added my own grounding point for the electrical installation. Torquing the ball to 160 foot-pounds was difficult for me. Am happy with results after several hours. eTrailer support and parts were excellent.

by:

I wasn't sure which hitch ball to get but I called and Paula was super helpful with me. I told her which bumper I was getting but didn't which hitch ball to get. I'm not a truck guy, in fact, I'm not a fan but this is supposed to be a gift for my son to his truck so I wanted it to be perfect and Paula was great she added it to my order for me. Once I got the bumper on, the hitch ball went perfect right after. Definitely worth the purchase and my son's truck looks so much better now.

by:

I had a great experience with etrailer.

by:

Yes the trailer, ball hitch and battery you installed worked great. It has served us well and you did a great job.

by:

Everyone said that they never saw one on a Mercedes-Benz, let alone, a convertable.

This is my father's 1965 sailboat and 1965 Sears trailer. The car is a 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK 450. I had not sailed the boat since 1977. I have the license plate from the trailer to prove it. The dealer who sold me the car had never put a hitch on a car. After he saw the trailer attached to the car, he offered me a job. I turned it down, but I told him if he ever got a request, I would help him with it.

Thanks for everything.

by:

This just the product I was looking for because I needed an especially long length (to clear the back bumper) and extra rise (to accommodate the trailer height). While the website was great, the ordering process was even better, because I needed help from the sales associate in marrying two products. I was given great service, from e-trailer.

by:

The package was left up one flight of stairs, thirty feet from my apartment and vulnerable to theft. Luckily my son recognized the box and asked if that was some I ordered. We recovered it and no other issues came into play.

Thank you,

by:

Customer service was amazing. I ordered this for my business and etrailer immediately called me after I had ordered the wrong ball size. Simultaneously, another customer relations personnel reached out via email to confirm I had meant to order the ball. Cant say enough of how easily they solved an issue before it turned into a problem. Installed hitch the day it arrived, less than 30 min with the help of their instructions and an install video.

by:

Solid piece of equipment at a great pri ce

by:

Quick. Fair Price. Excellent Communication. First, we ordered the hitch and had it installed. Then we needed the perfect fit for the task at hand: to pull a tank with gray water through a campground. Very specific. Just for our toad, a Smart car.
Etrailer.com has the perfect software to lead you to what you need for the perfect combination. Quick shipment, reasonably priced. Direct communication for every step in the process. All in all, exactly what you’d hope for during these extremely dysfunctional time.

by:

I did not receive this item. The hitch and wiring harness arrived, but no hitch ball...

by:

This hitch ball has held up great and shows no signs of wear after almost a year

by:

by:

Now I can tow my teardrop trailer or put on my bike rack. etrailer made it easy for adapting my Scion for towing.

by:

Super fast shipping

by:

Excellent quality

by:

came as noted. High quality. easy to deal with. Will use this company again for any future needs

by:

The hitch was well made and relatively easy to install. I installed it on a 2016 Golf Sportwagen LE. I can confirm that as others have stated that I did NOT need to trim the bumper fascia (as the instructions said I would need to). I separated the black, lower part of the fascia from the top part before reinstalling the main fascia. I was then able to snap the lower part on after fitting it around the hitch chain loops.
A couple of other notes: the LE has the rear cross traffic alert. The sensors are bolted on each side of the bumper. I thought with the additional thickness of the sensors that the bolts might not be long enough but they fit fine.
As has been mentioned in other reviews, the torx screws in the wheel wells have very little clearance. I highly recommend getting a torx racquet set. I bought one at a hardware store for about $20 (Kobalt 24-Piece Standard (SAE) and Metric Mechanic's Tool Set with Hard Case). This makes the removal of those screws straight-forward.

by:

The short shank of this ball is great for an ATV going to off road because it give more ground clearance, so it’s less likely to hang in stumps or rocks in the forest. I use it with my LogRite ATV Arch, with my wood splitter, and for transporting maple water to my sugar house to produce maple syrup.

by:

I want to say thank you to the manufacturer for instructions on how to properly tighten the hitch ball nut.

by:

The perfect fit for what I needed.
Great
service and great products!

by:

I got the hitch to tow my pond boat/rig. So far so good. Got the products in quickly and came with a load of good and helpful information to install it.

by:

Great product. Poor instructions. Once I was given correct instructions it was put on without issue.

  • Recommended 1-1/4 Class 1 Hitch for a 2023 Honda HR-V
The best hitch for your 2023 Honda HR-V is going to be the Curt Trailer Hitch item # C68DR. This hitch is custom fit and bolts to your Honda with included hardware. I really like this hitch because it mounts between the bumper bar and your bumper cover. This conceals everything but the 1-1/4" receiver. This is a class I hitch with a 1-1/4" receiver. It has a 2,000 lbs towing capacity, and a 200 lbs maximum tongue weight. I have linked a pictures below so you can see what this hitch looks...

I can confirm that the heat shield will have to be removed to install the Curt Trailer Hitch item # C23HR on your 2021 Hyundai Sonata. The heat shield mounts on the frame where the trailer hitch will sit so it has to go. I have attached a screenshot below from the instructions so you can see this step. All the heat shield does is block the heat from the muffler. Once the hitch is in its place the steel does a far superior job of keeping exhaust heat away from your car. If you are planning...

Both the EcoHitch # 306-X7359 and the Draw-Tite # DT47GR are partially concealed once installed. The only visible portion of the hitch will be the receiver tube and safety chain loops, with the remainder of the hitch being concealed behind the vehicle's bumper. The EcoHitch # 306-X7359 features a 2 inch receiver tube, so if you're needing the hitch for a hitch mounted accessory designed for a 2 inch hitch, this would be the hitch you'd want to use. I'll just rip this band-aid off as fast as I can but there is just not a way to use a standard hitch-mounted bike rack and tow at the same time with your 2006 Toyota Matrix XR. The issue, like you said, is the 1-1/4 inch hitch not having an adapter; even if it did though, hitch adapters reduce hitch capacity by 50% so you'd be going over that as well.
