Trailer Wiring Recommendation for a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox, Circuit Protected vs Unprotected
Updated 06/17/2011 | Published 06/15/2011 >
Question:
2010 Equinox. If the wiring is sensitive and subject to the possibility of damage $$$$! why even offer the 56094? Is it based on power draw? I pull a 5x8 utility trailer and a 17 boat trailer with simple running and brake light, but I dont want any risk of damage to my auto wiring. Please explain. Thanks

We stock both the Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118494, and the Curt Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 56094, because we have customers that request both styles. Many times customers do not want to run the extra wire to the vehicle battery, so they order the # 56094 harness. The Battery connection is the biggest advantage of the # 118494 harness for protecting the vehicle circuitry.
I would use the circuit protected model, # 118494, because there is always a possibility of a short circuit or damage to the trailer wiring, especially on a boat trailer that is partially submerged in water repeatedly.
Both harnesses will work, but in the event of an electrical short, the # 118494, harness will protect the vehicles circuitry from any back feed. This harness powers the trailer lights directly from the battery and only draws about 5 milliamps on the vehicles lighting circuits.
