Trailer Hitch, Installation, and Wiring for a 2017 Lexus RX 350

Updated 05/12/2017 | Published 05/11/2017

Question:

Hello, Looking at the video and installation instructions, it appears the Lexus is on a car lift for installation. Would it be realistic to somewhat easily install without a lift, just by laying on the ground under the car? Would I need to use a jack? Also the instructions suggest 86 lbs of torque. I just have a smaller 12 inch torque wrench that doesnt measure lbs to my knowledge, so I guess I guess i would need to buy one of those as well? Thanks!

The manufacturers and installers (like us) have the luxury of lifts to install trailer hitches and other things but they are not required. It makes it easier for sure especially when making an installation video!

You could install Curt trailer hitch # C13272 on your 2017 Lexus RX 350 by just lying on the ground but the more space you have the easier it will be. Using a jack, ramps, jack stands, will give you more space should you need it.

The wrench you have sounds like a ratchet or other wrench because the purpose of a torque wrench is to measure foot pounds or other such values. So if yours does not then it is some other type of wrench. Some auto parts stores can loan out tools like torque wrenches but if you want to have one at home for situations like this you can use # ALL644044 which is about as basic as they come (but they get the job done).

If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.

If the ball mount kit does not have the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, use the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.

And to add a trailer wiring harness to the rear of your 2017 Lexus RX 350 you can use # 118255. I have linked a video review of the wiring harness as well.
