For your 2016 VW Golf, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # C11412 which is confirmed to fit all 2016 Golf models except the GTI and R models. This hitch has a round tube design and is black gloss powder coated for rust resistance. If you will be using this hitch receiver for accessories like a bike rack or cargo carrier, you will also need the Curt Stabilization Strap # 18050.
If you will be using this hitch receiver for towing, I recommend the Curt Class II Drawbar - 2-5/8" Rise, 3-1/4" Drop - 7-1/4" Long - 3,500 lbs # C45521. This ball mount will work well using the # 19256 for a 1-7/8 inch ball or # 19258 for a 2 inch hitch ball option.
For your vehicle wiring, I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118646. This will connect to your factory wiring on either side of your vehicle in the rear cargo area and will draw power directly from the battery to prevent overload and protect your vehicle wiring and electronics.
