To install the Curt Class III Trailer Hitch # C13316, on your 2017 BMW X3 there is underbody trimming required, but not fascia. There won't be anything trimmed that will be visible from the back of your vehicle. Installation does require temporary removal of bumper during installation, but there is no drilling required. I've attached a video of the installation on an older model X3 for you. The installation hasn't changed, nor has the hitch receiver for your 2017 model with M Sport package.

If you will be towing with your X3, I recommend the Curt Channel Style Adjustable Ballmount - 2" & 2-5/16" Balls - 14,000 lbs, # C45900. This adjustable ball mount will allow you to use a 2 inch or 2-5/16 inch ball and adjust the height to tow your trailer level. I also recommend the Curt Lock Set for Adjustable Channel-Style Mounts, # C23556, that will secure your ball mount to the vehicle and will secure the ball to your mount. I've attached an article on choosing the correct ball mount for you.

For your vehicle, I recommend the ZCI Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, # 119250KIT. This wiring harness allows you to connect a 4-way flat trailer connection to your vehicle without altering any of the vehicle wiring or voiding any warranty. It simply clamps around the wires and can capture the signal without penetrating the wire. The powered module ensures that no power is drawn from the other wires, you get all the power needed from the battery. To install this harness, you will want to follow the instructions for your specific vehicle, which in this case is the "BT" wiring code. The installation instructions are linked to this page for you.

The trimming that needs to be done is on plastic molding that sits under the top portion of the bumper that won't be seen and then on the underbody trim. This trim piece has a significant cut to go around the hitch, but it is a separate piece that attaches to the bumper underneath. You won't be altering the stock bumper in any way, but the trim under the bumper will have a box cut out. You can see this marking, cut, and the installation of this piece in the attached installation video from minute 9:13 to 10:10. I've attached a picture with green arrows outlining the portion of the cut for you to see.
