Torque Rating for Trailer Hub Wheel Studs for 1/2 Inch Lug Nuts
Updated 08/09/2016 | Published 08/08/2016 >
Question:
What is the recommended torque spec for this stud? The dealer torqued them with a impact wrench to about 250 ft lbs. I know this is too much. Should I replace the studs as I do not want them to fail in the future as I had a failure on my trailer when all the studs broke off one wheel because they where loose. Recommendation?

Wheel stud # 165995 is a drive-in wheel stud meaning it gets driven into a hub with a mallet or similar tool. Since it is a 1/2 inch the lug nuts, when tightened, 1/2 inch lug nuts should be at 75 to 85 foot pounds on 8 inch to 14 inch steel or aluminum wheels, 90 to 120 foot pounds for 15 to 16 inch steel wheels, and 90 to 100 foot pounds on 15 or 16 inch aluminum wheels.
