Question:

I need to add a 4 pin trailer wiring harness but I dont have time to get a plug in shipped. It has the tow package connector. If I hard wire a kit, do I need to use a convertor? There are 6 wires going in but only 4 will come out. How do I figure out the color codes on the wires?

Sounds like you are wanting to hardwire a 4-way to the trailer wiring harness on your vehicle. The only way to know the function is to test the wires with a tester like part # PTW2993 like what you see in the video I attached a link to.

Since the trailer wiring harness for your 2001 Xterra like the part # 118244 does not have a converter in it the circuits would easily be ready to be hardwired to a 4-way.
