4-Way Trailer Connector Wiring Harness for a 2002 Nissan Xterra
Updated 05/17/2010 | Published 05/13/2010 >
Question:
which connector is recommeded to use for basic lighting needs such as turn signal, running and brake lights. I know it should be the 4 way connector but on the xterra the running light also serves as the brake light if i wire them together you wont see the difference. Should i upgrade to the 5 way connector? Or what is recommended.

For your 2002 Nissan Xterra, you will only need a 4-Way for brake, turn, and running light functions. A 5-pole would add reverse lights which are not legally required on a trailer. The best thing to do is to get the plug and adapter (if needed) that matches your trailer.
What you will need for the basic brake, turn, and running lights is Draw-Tite Wiring, # 119178KIT. This converts a 3-wire system (vehicles with separate turn and stop lights) to a basic 2-wire system which is the standard for a trailer. This kit is easy to install. First, you will need access to the wires behind the taillights. Using the included circuit tester, find the wire that carries a signal in unison with the left blinker and attach it to the yellow wire on the harness.
Next, find the wire that carries a constant signal when the vehicle lights are on. Attach it to the brown wire on the harness. Next, find the wire that caries a signal ONLY when the brake pedal is pressed. Attach this wire to the red wire on the harness. The white wire is the ground and will connect to an existing ground point of the vehicle frame.
Last, route the green wire to the passenger side taillight. Find the wire that carries a signal in unison with the right turn signal. Attach this wire to the green wire. Re-assemble anything you took apart your you will be done.
If your Xterra has a factory tow package, you will need Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118244. The connection point for this harness is located under the vehicle, behind the rear bumper, on the passengers side. It simply plugs into an existing plug on the vehicle. I have included installation details and an install video below.
