Trailer Hitch and Cargo Carrier to Transport Wheelchair on a 2011 Toyota Prius

Updated 07/01/2015 | Published 06/30/2015

Question:

I am disabled and need to start taking a wheel chair or scooter with me. I have a 2011 Toyota Prius. Is it possible to install a hitch and carrier to my car? If so what do I need? Thank you

While there are trailer hitches for the 2011 Toyota Prius, Toyota does not recommend installing one because they think customers will try to tow trailers with them. But you should not need to tow a trailer if you carry just a manual wheelchair and not a heavy electric one or scooter.

What you would need is a hitch # 24847. Then you would need a cargo carrier such as # C18110 which weighs 30 pounds. That means that the chair you put on the carrier would have to weigh less than 170 pounds to stay within the capacity of the trailer hitch. I have linked video reviews of the carrier and installation of the hitch for you.
