How to Add a 7-Way Trailer Connector to a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe

Updated 01/07/2025 | Published 03/11/2015

Question:

I need a seven pin with live wire for trailer braking instead of four pin which I would also like for my utility trailer. What do I need to add to have a seven pin connector. My 2014 Santa Fe is factory pre wired. Thanks for the help

You will need a few different items to add a 7-way trailer connector to your 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe because Hyundai did not offer a factory connection for a 7-way trailer connector, only for a 4-way.

If your Santa Fe was pre-wired for the factory tow package, then the first item that you will want is the Curt T-Connector Wiring Harness, # C56332. This will add a 4-way flat trailer connector. I have attached an installation video for you to check out.

Next, you will need our Universal 4-Way and 7-way Installation Kit, # ETBC7. This kit includes everything you need to have a fully functioning 7-way trailer connector with a 12v hot lead, but it does not include a brake controller. The 4-way to 7-way adapter that is included with this kit has sockets for both the 7-way round connector and the 4-way flat connector so you can tow different trailers. I have attached an installation video of this kit on a 2014 Santa Fe for you to check out as well. When we installed this kit, we found that using a no-drill mount bracket, # 18140, made it easier to mount the 7-way socket.

If the trailers your are towing have brakes, then you may want to add a brake controller. I recommend looking at the Tekonsha Prodigy P3, # 90195. This is the top brake controller on the market and I have attached a review video for you to check out. The brake controller installation is covered in the install videos I attached.

Hi, I have the same question but for a 2017 that already have a 4 pin connector from factory. I know that there is a kit now called Tekonsha 22122 Tow Harness But then I found this thread about the ETBC7 who is cheaper So my question, do I absolutly need to buy a brake controller if my trailer needs brake on the 7 pin connector? or if I install the ETBC7 kit without the controller the brake will work on the trailer? Same question for the Tekonsha 22122 Tow Harness, is the controller needed or not to have brake working? Thanks

@Sebastien You will still need to add a brake controller with either harness. They only include the wiring for a brake controller, but not the actual controller itself and the controller is required to supply power to your trailer brakes. As far as a controller goes, if you want something that will be super easy to install and use, the Curt Echo # C51180, just plugs into the 7-way connector from the harness and you only need to pull it out when you are towing. If you'd prefer something that will just get the job done at a great price, then the Tekonsha POD # TK56ER is less than half the cost. The only downside to this controller is that it will permanently mount to your dash. I've had this type of controller in my trucks for years and you barely notice it after a little while. Let me know what you think.
