Spare Tire Optional Modification for Installing Torklift Hitch on Short Bed 2012 Ram 3500HD
Updated 03/09/2015 | Published 03/08/2015 >
Question:
I have seen that installation requires a modification of the spare tire carrier in short bed Dodge trucks I have 2012 Dodge 3500 HD short bed, but it isnt clear to me what that modification is. The only modification I saw in the installation guide appeared to be optional - you could cut off part of the spare tire carrier loop to avoid the 2inch in the spare tire after super hitch installation. Is this the modification that Torklift mentions with regard to short bed trucks or is there something else that has to be done? It didnt sound like the 2inch in the spare tire affected clearance of the vehicle.

Helpful Expert Reply:
For the short bed models of the 2012 Ram 3500HD if you have a 17 inch diameter spare tire it will get stowed about 2 inches lower after the installation is complete.
This lower storage height has been tested and does not present any ground, exhaust or differential clearance issues.
In the event that the original spare tire stowage position is preferred, the spare tire locator loop can be removed. Simply remove the loop by cutting on the marks shown below. Apply a good quality rust inhibiting paint to the cut edge and reinstall the spare tire.
