Double-Eye Leaf Spring Basics

Leaf springs, as you probably know, make up an important part of your trailer's suspension. Their main purpose is to absorb road shock as you travel, as well as allow your axle(s) to move independently of the rest of the trailer.

Double-Eye Spring Parts

To mount this leaf spring, you'll need hangers welded onto your trailer frame - which you probably already have in place - as well as shackle straps and a suspension bolt. It's a good idea to replace your existing straps and bolt while you're under there working on things because they tend to wear out quickly. One thing that could help keep them from wearing out too fast would be upgrading to galvanized or zinc-plated hardware. Doing so will boost the corrosion resistance and, therefore, the longevity of your trailer.

We also always recommend replacing both of your springs at the same time because it's not unusual for leaf springs to sag and elongate over time. If you replace just the one, there's a good chance that it won't match your existing spring on the opposite side of your trailer, and that can mess up your alignment.

  • What Would Cause Trailer Suspension Equalizer to Sit Unlevel
It sounds like you installed leaf springs that weren't the correct length for your setup. Looking at your equalizer it looks like your springs are too long. The simplest solution would be to have your front and rear suspension hangers removed and reinstalled further out and that would get rid of the issue. Sometimes a shorter length equalizer can help but for you I don't think there's a way to get a shorter one in there.

  • Switching From Slipper Springs to Double-Eye Springs on 4 x 6 Trailer
To replace your slipper springs with double-eye leaf springs you first want to take a quick measurement of the existing leaf spring stack. Measure from the center of the eye to the end of the spring to make sure the new double-eye assembly has a similar length. Also be sure that the new springs have the capacity needed to support the loaded weight of your trailer. The 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # e84SR that you were looking at measures 20-3/8 inches from eye to eye, 1-3/4 inches wide, and...

If you can provide me with the hub face to hub face and spring center to spring center measurement, I can go about trying to find a replacement axle for you.

  • Determining Hanger Spacing for Replacement Leaf Springs on Trailer
The closest leaf spring set we have available to the 22-1/4 inch length you mentioned is the 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # SP-113275. This double-eye leaf spring features a length of 23-1/2 inches from the center of the spring eye to the center of the other spring eye. I recommend making sure you are measuring your existing leaf spring from the center of one eye to the center of the other. This particular set is designed for 2,000 pound axles, so you will want to also make sure any new springs...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Tandem Trailer Axles Where One Is Closer to Trailer Frame than Other
It sounds like your trailer isn't sitting totally level when hooked up to your tow vehicle. Does the front of the trailer sit higher than the rear? Judging by the angle of the equalizer in the picture you sent me it looks to be nose high. If so, then you would need to go with a ball mount that has more drop to allow it to sit level when you are towing. Check out the help article I attached on how to pick out the correct rise/drop ball mount to tow trailer level.

  • Replaced Leaf Springs On Tandem Axle Boat Trailer And The Rear Springs Are Tilting Rear Axle Forward
If you do not have the boat on the tandem axle trailer, what you have mentioned is how the trailer suspension will look without a load on it. The equalizer will be up in the rear and the rear spring will be tilting the axle forward. The reason is because the rear tires on your boat trailer are made to scrub when turning and with the suspension set up this way it keeps the majority of the load on the trailer from being put on the rear tires. If the boat is on your trailer and the trailer...

  • Can 750 lb Trailer With 3,500 lb Axle Use Lower Rated Leaf Springs
Yes, you can use a lower-rated leaf spring for your 750 lb trailer, though the capacity of your trailer is going to be that of its lowest-rated component. I assume your trailer is 750 lbs unloaded, so if you were to change to a 1,500 lb rated leaf spring, for example, then your trailer would only be able to have a fully loaded weight of 1,500 lbs. In regards to the correct replacements, that is going to depend on whether or not you have double-eye springs or slipper springs and a couple...

  • What is the Compressed Dimensions of the etrailer 3-Leaf Double-Eye Springs
Hey Preston, we don't have that exact measurement but typically springs compress about 1 1/2" when under a full load. So not under a load, the 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 2,000-lb Trailer Axles # e84SR is 3 3/16" from the top of the springs to the center of the eye - under a load it would effectively compress to 1 11/16". If there is anything else I can do for you, feel free to let me know in the comments and I'd be happy to help!

  • Replacement Trailer Leaf Springs for Tandem Axle Travel Trailer
It is not uncommon for a leaf spring to become elongated after years of use. One spring size we offer, 20-1/4-inches from eye center to eye center, may after years of use indeed measure slightly longer. There is certainly a chance that when new your springs were this size. The link provided will show you the two double-eye leaf springs we offer in this size and both are rated for use with 2000-lb axles, part # e84SR. These are 3-leaf types but they can be used in your application as long...

  • Can Leaf Springs Be Replaced With Higher Capacity Springs And Parts Needed For Replacement
You can replace your lower rated leaf springs with a higher capacity spring with the same dimensions, but your trailer will ride much stiffer. Adding higher capacity springs will not add more to your trailer's capacity so you'll want to still stick to your trailer's current limitations. Since you'll be removing the U-bolts to swap out the leaf springs it's recommended to replace them as well. For a 3" diameter axle you'll need U-Bolt Kit # CE23003.

This will put each of the 3 axles 28-1/2 inches on center. I've attached a photo to assist. This is all based on 7-3/4 inch curved equalizers and 2-5/8 inch long shackle straps. To determine the correct springs you will need to know a few variables to ensure that you do not damage your trailer. You have the first variable being the load or as you suggest a 1,000lb raft. Next you need to add the weight of the trailer frame and all brackets and boards on the trailer. You will not add the axle weight as that is un-sprung weight. Say the trailer frame and components are 500lbs. This puts the un-sprung weight at 1,500lbs. Next you will need to ensure that the load does...
