Switching From Slipper Springs to Double-Eye Springs on 4 x 6 Trailer

Updated 03/17/2020 | Published 08/02/2019

Question:

I just purchased a 2012 4 by 6 Carry-On trailer and would like to switch from slipper springs to double eye springs, preferably a lower weight capacity as well for a smoother ride. I will just be using this trailer to haul my tent camping gear and Jackson Kayak.

To replace your slipper springs with double-eye leaf springs you first want to take a quick measurement of the existing leaf spring stack. Measure from the center of the eye to the end of the spring to make sure the new double-eye assembly has a similar length. Also be sure that the new springs have the capacity needed to support the loaded weight of your trailer. The 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # e84SR that you were looking at measures 20-3/8 inches from eye to eye, 1-3/4 inches wide, and is designed for 2,000 pound axles.

I have attached a link that will take you to our complete selection of double-eye springs that you can look through. If you can tell me the length of your current springs I will also be happy to make a specific recommendation.

In addition to the leaf springs themselves you will also need to cut off your current hangers and weld on new ones. A popular single axle hanger kit is the etrailer.com # APS4, which includes 3-1/4 inch tall front hangers, 1-1/4 inch tall rear hangers, and 3-1/8 inch shackle straps.

I have again attached a link to our selection of single axle hangers kits that you can look through if you determine different sizes are needed.

The bolt center line on my trailer measures 20 3/4 inch. The old style is a slipper style hook on one end measures 20 1/2 inch. Will a double eye spring 20 3/8 inch fit ? Will A 3/8 inch miss match work. Any suggestions ?Thanks

The 20-3/8" Double-Eye Springs # e84SR would work just fine to replace your existing slipper springs. Keep in mind that you'll need to replace the hangers anyway, so being just a tiny bit off from your current spacing isn't a big deal - as the new ones can be welded on in the right locations for the springs.
