Video Transcript for Feature Review Safety Chain with 2 Hooks for Gen-Y 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box

Hi everyone, Aidan here with etrailer. Today, we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to install these safety chains for your Gen-Y gooseneck. This is gonna be a 3/8 inch diameter chain and it's going to be 84 inches long. It's gonna be one section of chain with two clevis hook ends, and it's designed to work with your Gen-Y gooseneck, because the chain just feeds through the cross-shaped holes that are already existing on your pin box here, and there's no need to break out the torque wrench. It's got a 26,000 pound weight capacity and it's going to be a Grade 70 chain. Just like any other safety chain out there, it's gonna be that backup connection between your trailer and your vehicle in case there is an emergency disconnect, you still have this holding it in place.

And like I said earlier, the install process is really easy, there's no need to bolt anything down, break up the torque wrench, it's really just feeding that chain through the pin box, so let's check it out. To start with the install, we're gonna take off one of the clevis hook ends for our safety chains just by grabbing some needle-nose pliers and straightening out this pin right here, so we can take it out. May need to grab your pliers for that too just to get a better grip. And remove the clevis hook, and we can feed that free end of the chain through the gooseneck where we have this cross-shaped hole. So I'm just gonna feed it through this end right here and out the other side, and then we can get it all symmetrical.

So from here, I'm gonna get these nice and even with each other, just pulling the slack out of one side, adding it to the other until everything is draping evenly. Then, once everything's even, we can just grab our hook and our pins, run them back through each other and re-secure the hook by bending the cotter pin back out and securing the hook in place. And that's it for the install, it's a really simple process, and now, we've got our upgraded safety chains on our Gen-Y gooseneck..

Shipping on this item was quick and packaged extremely well. The GenY hitch exceeded our expectations. We just completed a 600 mile trip. In the first 100 miles we noticed some stiffness, but after that it loosened up and on the return home we definitely noticed a difference. The hitch is very easy to hook up and as long as you are within a few inches the hitch will center itself and slide onto the ball. We towed with an F350 6 3/4 foot bed and I do not see any need for the 4 inch extension ball setup. A subcompact tractor makes 1 person install of the hitch a complete breeze. The angle is perfect. I ordered the GenY chains and mounting bolts and all worked very well.

Sweet! What kind of trailer are you hauling?

by:

If you are going to tow as a gooseneck- this is absolutely the best hitch out there.

by:

Nice chain but over $100 is ridiculous. And it should have been included with the $1500 Gen Y Gooseboc I just bought from Etrailer.

by:

Product is doing well, no corrosion or rust so far on the chain and hooks. Have been very pleased with this safety chain and hooks.

by:

Work as they should. No corrosion yet.

by:

Easy to install

by:

Quality product and fast shipping! As advertised! Thanks guys!

by:

Super easy install. Straighten cotter pin, pull it out, pull pin and hook is removed. Feed chain through, put hook and pin back on and bend cotter. Literally a 5 minute job! Grade 70 chain and about the same as sourcing elsewhere.

by:

Will work fine with Gen Y Gooseneck hitch I purchased from Camping World on sale.

by:

Looks like it will do the job

by:

Just what was needed

by:

Great quality !
Perfect for my appli
cation

by:

Fast shipping , great item

by:

Nice heavy duty chain. Great quality.

by:

Easy to install.

by:

The first time the chain arrived I set it aside to deal with other things until I was ready to install the gen y hitch I bought it for. Once I took a look at it, the chain was wrong and was too long, the clevis's weren't right. I contacted e-trailer and was sent the correct chain on a two day shipping and then sent the other one back. They are human and make mistakes but they sure take care of business when they need to fix something. Thanks e-trailer.

by:

Heavy duty chain. Exactly what I needed for my GenY gooseneck hitch.
Etrailer did a great job keeping me updated on my order and the delivery was fast!

by:

Awesome build quality

by:

They fit great and arrived a day earlier that first projected.

  • Comparing 5th Wheel Hitch And Gen-Y Goosebox Options For Pulling A 5th Wheel With 2024 Chevy 2500
Hello Rege, thanks for reaching out. It sounds like you are definitely on the right track with your thinking and with your assessment and comparisons of the products you mentioned. For the 5th wheel hitch, the Demco Auto slide # DM29GV and the B&W Companion Slider # BWRVK3775 are the best two options as far as solid, durable USA made hitches. It sounds like you will be towing fairly often, so between those two options, I recommend the Demco. The automatic slider is extremely convenient...

Thanks for the information! The Reese Goose Box 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Air Ride Coupler Adapter item # RP85FR you were looking at fits the Lippert 1621, 1716, 0719, Rhino, and Fabex PB 600 series pin boxes. In order to verify this will replace your Road Armor Trailair I would need the RPO number or a picture of the sticker on your pinbox. It has a 20,000 lbs towing capacity. The enclosed air bag and dual shock absorbers provide extra cushion and will absorb road shock. The Reese Goosebox...

Since we are not 100% sure of the serial number on your 2015 Keystone Cougar 279RKSWE I recommend verifying the bolt measurements on the pin box. A 1621 pin box is going to have the 5/8" bolt holes spread 2" vertically and 7-7/8" horizontally on center. If you have something different please let me know otherwise the Gen-Y Hitch 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box # GY58GR is going to be the correct bolt pattern and weight range for your Cougar. Hey Brett, The pin box on your 2016 Reflection is a 1621 rated at 15.5K according to my contact at Lippert. If we take that and the GVWR of your RV into account this means you need the Gen-Y Pin Box Adapter # GY38FR. I took a look at the Lippert Gooseneck Connect and it's just a basic version adapter while the Gen-Y has the integrated rubber torsion arms so you'll actually see more of a benefit using the Gen-Y and is why I recommend going that route. You just need to pick up a set of...

Yes, Tina, the MORryde GooseTech is a great modern solution for that. Instead of air bags, it uses a rubber shear-spring to absorb shock without needing air pressure checks. It’s essentially maintenance-free and a big upgrade over traditional 5th-wheel gear since you can ditch the hitch entirely. What trailer are you running now so I can verify the pin-box fit? I've attached an article that helps you find that out on your own, but I'm here if you need more help. Also, here are a few common...

Hey Ron, welcome back! I reached out to Lippert and that is a 1621 you have on your 2025 Keystone Cougar 23MLE. Gen-Y has updated their weight ranges so the 4.5k TW model works with a GVWR of 7,275 lbs - 16,360 lbs. They tow smoother than some outdated adapters and don’t need air bags or maintenance which is a huge plus in my opinion. Plus, you can ditch that big steel hitch and have your bed free again.
