Can Gooseneck Adapter For 5th Wheels Crack Or Damage The Frame? Which Models Are Available?

Updated 11/03/2025 | Published 10/29/2025

Question:

I’ve heard gooseneck adapters can crack frames. Is that still true, or are there safer options now?

Good question, Logan. Some of the old bolt-on adapters were a problem, usually from people using the wrong size and overloading it. But 5th wheel to gooseneck adapters are generally safe and accepted as a proper and legitimate upgrade.

Modern replacements like the MORryde GooseTech are built specifically for your trailer’s frame. They replace the entire pin box, so load is distributed correctly, and the internal rubber cushion helps absorb stress. You’ll also gain the bonus of removing your heavy 5th-wheel hitch as well.

What brand of trailer do you have? I can tell you which GooseTech fits safely.
For example, we have the
# MR77MV for Lippert 1116 11,500 lbs to 14,000 lbs Gross Towing Weight
# MR39MV for Lippert 1716 11,500 lbs to 14,000 lbs Gross Towing Weight
# MR97MV for Lippert 1621 14,000 lbs to 18,000 lbs Gross Towing Weight
# MR24MV for Lippert Rhino 18,000lbs + Gross Towing Weight

Also need Safety Chains # GY49GR

If yours doesn't fall into these categories, let me know and I'll find the correct upgrade that matches your setup! I've also attached an article that helps you determine which pin box you have.

Thanks, Andrew. It’s a 2019 Grand Design Solitude 344GK. I’ve read all kinds of scary stuff on RV forums about broken frames, so this helps. Do you think this setup will outlast the trailer?

@Logan That’s a great question, Logan - and I don’t blame you for being wary. Those horror stories usually come from folks who clamped on those old “tube” adapters back in the day. The GooseTech replaces the pin box entirely, so you’re good there. I actually know a guy who runs the same Solitude as you - he swapped to the GooseTech two seasons ago and said the ride got noticeably quieter. He’s put about 10K miles on it now with zero issues. The rubber core inside this thing is thick enough to possibly outlive the trailer frame if you keep everything torqued and greased. Are you planning to do the install yourself or have a shop do it?
