Towing Keystone Montana Fifth Wheel Lippert 1716 Pin Box With A Gooseneck Ball

Updated 11/03/2025 | Published 10/30/2025

Question:

I’ve got a Keystone Montana 3120RL with a Lippert 1716 pin box. If I switch to a gooseneck, will it ride rougher or smoother than my current hitch?

Colton - it’ll ride smoother if you go to a cushioned design like the MORryde GooseTech # MR39MV. Its rubber core dampens chucking and vertical shock, so you feel less bounce in the cab (the trailer will appreciate it too). It’s also an upgrade because you can toss that heavy hitch and gain your truck bed back.

Pair it with chains # GY49GR and you’re ready to tow from your factory ball.

Is anything wrong with your current setup, or just looking for a good reason to upgrade?

that hitch is a beast to move in and out of the truck, and I could use the extra space. Think I’ll need an offset ball for turning clearance with my short-bed F-250?

@Colton Good call asking, Colton. With a short-bed truck, you’ll probably be fine most of the time since the GooseTech sits about the same as your fifth-wheel setup, but if you ever feel tight on cab clearance, an offset ball can give you a couple more inches to play with. Just be sure to match the offset ball to your exact hitch system - Ford OEM, B&W, Curt, etc. They’re all a little different fit-wise. Want me to help confirm which hitch you’ve got in the bed?
