Video Transcript for Let’s Check Out the etrailer Rubber Hitch Cover for 2" Trailer Hitches

Hey, everybody, Ryan here at Etrailer. Today we're gonna be checking out the etrailer.com trailer hitch cover. So right off the bat, this is gonna work with the two inch by two inch hitches, like we have here today on our Jeep, just as an example, and there's also a smaller inch and a quarter by inch and a quarter version available. So if you've got the smaller size hitch, there will be a plug that fits that as well, but really a super simple part, and it's designed for a couple of different reasons. You know, one of 'em being to help keep dirt and junk from getting inside of the receiver tube here, help keep it in good shape, whether. You know, it's debatable how well that actually works, but in my opinion, it's definitely not gonna hurt anything as far as that goes.

So might extend the life of your hitch, especially if you use this, you know, when your hitch is new, like ours today, but more importantly, I think that this is mainly for the appearance. I think it makes it look a whole lot better and a lot more finished. So as opposed to just having that open tube there, you know, this pops in, (plastic smacking) and to me I like the looks of it, kind of gives it more of a clean appearance, and with this being made out of rubber, it can potentially kind of soften a blow too. You know, some hitches stick out past the bumper quite a bit, and if you we're to happen to kind of bump your leg or something while you're getting into your trunk or dropping your tailgate, not gonna hurt as bad. Like I said, this is made from rubber and one of the nice things about it is you don't need a pin and clip or tools or anything to use it.

You know, it's a press fit, and it's a tight fit at that. So that's all you gotta do to put it in there and pull it right out, and these seem to hold up pretty well. I can actually speak from personal experience. My father's had one of these for probably two and a half, three years now, and it hasn't dry rotted. You know, it still goes in there well and comes out just like it did when it was brand new, and he don't park in the garage either.

He lives on a country gravel road. So it's out in the sun all day getting beat up, and so it seems to hold up, at least so far. So can't really go wrong there. You know, there's a ton of different styles of hitch covers on the market, and this is probably one of the more simple ones. Probably gonna last longest in terms of it holding up, but in case you're looking for something a little bit different, you got kind of this style, which kind of doubles as a four-way flat trailer wiring holder as well.

So I just have this other cover on hand that would kind of plug in into there trailer wiring and be able to keep it stored, if you will, and the way these work is they go around your hitch share and then push in, which is pretty cool. You know, you kind of, you get that holder in there. My thought, though, with these, you know, it's nice that this can stay on there. You can plug your accessory in. You don't have to keep track of it or anything, but I don't really see that lasting too long to be quite frank with you because that part of the rubber is relatively thin. It's kind of a high wear area. I could eventually see this probably cracking and tearing and then, you know, you're kind of losing the function of that, but can't speak from personal experience. That's just my thought on it, and then if you're looking for some extra safety or a little extra lighting, you know, we have stuff like this too, which will illuminate, you know, when you're hitting your brakes and stuff. So that could go in with these. You know, a lot of 'em you're gonna need a pin and clip to keep it in place, but that push in there. You plug this part into your trailer wiring and you know, like I said, this will illuminate whenever you're applying your brakes. Other than that, at the end of the day, you know, there's really not a whole lot to it. It's gonna be a great way to help keep your hitch protected and look a little bit better whenever you're not using it.

  • How Many Digits Does The VIN Of a 1987 Calkins Boat Trailer Have?
The 17-charachter VIN became the standard in the USA January of 1981. So you should have a 17 digit VIN on your 1987 Calkins boat trailer. Prior to this VIN's ranged from 5 to 13 digits depending on the manufacturer.

  • Recommended Electric Trailer Jack For A 2018 Jayco Whitehawk
Hi Tom, I have two options to replace the electric tongue jack on your Jayco Whitehawk: Option 1: Electric Jack w/ Footplate # EJ-3520-BBX. This jack is going to be your no-frills 'get the job done' style jack. It has a 3,500lb capacity and what it lacks in looks it makes up for in dependability. The simple design of this jack also allows for easier replacement of damaged or worn components unlike a lot of other jacks that require complete replacement when something malfunctions. Option...

  • Parts Needed To Add Electric Drum Brakes To A Pontoon Trailer
Hey Jeremy, Typically with boat trailers the manufacturer will install hydraulic surge brakes because you don't have to worry about the water damaging wires like you would with electric brakes. That being said, if you use a heat shrink butt connector # DW05745-10 you'll be able to protect your electrical connections and shouldn't have a problem. To add brakes you'll need to check the axle/spindle to see if you have a brake mounting flange. If you don't then you'll have to buy new axles...

  • Is There A Trailer Hitch For A 2024 Honda Odyssey That Won't Interfere With Hands-Free Sensors
Hi Shay, The trailer hitch sits within the radius of the sensors so it will block their ability to sense your foot. No matter which hitch you choose the receiver tube will unfortunately interfere. Typically you just need to wave your foot on either side of the receiver tube a bit to find the sweet spot where the sensors can see you. You could go with the Hidden Hitch # DT76GR and remove the receiver tube when not in use to limit the interference with the sensors. That hitch is obviously...

  • Is The Placement OF GM's OEM Puck System Supposed To Sit Behind The Axle
Hey Jerry, GM moved the placement of their puck systems starting with 2020 models so you are correct that the pucks would have the hitch not sit directly over the axle. GM did the math and made sure that this placement wouldn't adversely affect your towing ability so it's totally fine as is. Moving the weight towards the front of the truck helps distribute the weight between the the front and rear axles, whereas being behind the rear axle and closer to the tailgate will place more weight...

  • How to Get Replacement Bearings for a Yakima Rack N Roll Trailer
Geoff, the wheel bearings for the Yakima Rack N Roll is not available for replacement, unfortunately. To replace the bearings you'd need to replace the entire wheel with the Replacement Wheels for Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer # 8880157, which would include the bearings pre-installed.

  • How to Identify Axles and Can Leaf Springs With Higher Capacity Be Installed
Hi Leo; I would start by checking to see if there are axle tags on the axles. They will probably have the capacity on them or at least a serial number the axle manufacturer could use to identify the axle. If the trailer manufacturer is still in business you could call them and identify the axles using the VIN. If the axle tag is missing you can try to go by diameter. Here are the typical axle diameters based on axle capacity: - 1,000-lb - 2,000-lb Axles: 1-1/2 inch - 1-3/4 inch diameter -...

  • Troubleshooting Sag When Hauling A travel Trailer With A 2022 Ram 1500
Hey Tim, I got your picture and it does look like you do have a little bit of sag while hooked up to your trailer. An easy way to see how much sag you're getting is to measure from the ground up to the center of the wheel well while unloaded and then again while loaded. You'll see the rear come down and the front raise as weight is added. We recommend staying within an 1" or less difference from the factory ride height. With Rams using coil springs instead of a leaf springs you'll typically...

On Dexter axles manufactured after April 2001 you will be able to find the serial number stamped on the rear portion of the axle tube approximately 18" from the passenger side hub. Depending on the condition of the axle you may need some chalk to better see the numbers on the tube. You may also find a sticker on the center of the rear portion of the tube. If this is still attached and legible you will need to find the SN# on the tag. With this information we can determine exactly what parts...

  • How to Measure Trailer Leaf Spring to Find Correct Replacement
To correctly measure a leaf spring, you'll want to jack the trailer up on jack stands so the axle is hanging freely, then measure directly across from the center of one spring eye to the other, as shown in the provided diagram. The height of the spring and the distance from the spring eye to the center of the spring can also be helpful in finding the correct replacement. To ensure you're getting the correct leaf springs, you'll also need to know the capacity of your axle. If you can find...
