The 17-charachter VIN became the standard in the USA January of 1981. So you should have a 17 digit VIN on your 1987 Calkins boat trailer. Prior to this VIN's ranged from 5 to 13 digits depending on the manufacturer.

I have a Calvin’s boat trailer, manufactured August 1973. Have the serial number and Model number but can’t get it registered because I can’t find VIN.

@Donna Typically the VIN tag would be on the frame either near the tongue or near the axles but with a trailer that old it very easily could be unreadable or missing. If it truly is missing I suggest reaching out to your local DMV to find out the process of getting a new VIN issued.

@JesseM Thanks for the reply. The tag by the tongue is in really good shape so easy to read. Only thing on it is manufacturing date, serial number and model number. I’ll call DMV in Olympia. Beginning to wonder if a VIN was ever issued

Can anyone give me a hint how could I trace my Calkins Escort tandem boat trailer specifications ie. type (catalogues etc.)? I’d like to register the trailer… but no VIN number anywhere. Trailer is ~23ft long tandem with bunk bed… made ~1985-1990? I have looked everywhere but all I can find is empty Calkins placard in the main tube

@Olli Unfortunately, we don’t have access to old Calkins/Escort catalogs or factory records that would allow us to identify the exact trailer model from the length and axle configuration. Since your trailer appears to be from the mid-to-late 1980s, it would normally have been assigned a 17-character VIN. I would inspect the frame very closely, particularly the inside/front portion of the frame rails near the tongue, for a number stamped directly into the steel. Cleaning those areas with a wire brush may reveal a lightly stamped number that has been covered by paint, rust, or corrosion. If the original Calkins placard is blank/unreadable and no stamped VIN can be found, the best next step would be to contact the agency that registers trailers in your state or province. They can advise on their inspection process and, when appropriate, issuance of a replacement or state-assigned VIN. The procedure varies by location, so I wouldn’t recommend creating or stamping a number yourself.
