The 17-charachter VIN became the standard in the USA January of 1981. So you should have a 17 digit VIN on your 1987 Calkins boat trailer. Prior to this VIN's ranged from 5 to 13 digits depending on the manufacturer.

I have a Calvin’s boat trailer, manufactured August 1973. Have the serial number and Model number but can’t get it registered because I can’t find VIN.

@Donna Typically the VIN tag would be on the frame either near the tongue or near the axles but with a trailer that old it very easily could be unreadable or missing. If it truly is missing I suggest reaching out to your local DMV to find out the process of getting a new VIN issued.

@JesseM Thanks for the reply. The tag by the tongue is in really good shape so easy to read. Only thing on it is manufacturing date, serial number and model number. I’ll call DMV in Olympia. Beginning to wonder if a VIN was ever issued
