Hi Leo; I would start by checking to see if there are axle tags on the axles. They will probably have the capacity on them or at least a serial number the axle manufacturer could use to identify the axle. If the trailer manufacturer is still in business you could call them and identify the axles using the VIN. If the axle tag is missing you can try to go by diameter. Here are the typical axle diameters based on axle capacity:
- 1,000-lb - 2,000-lb Axles: 1-1/2 inch - 1-3/4 inch diameter
- 3,500-lb Axles: 2-3/8 inch diameter
- 6,000-lb - 7,200-lb Axles: 3 inch diameter
- 8,000-lb Axles: 3-1/2 inch diameter
- 9,000-lb Axles: 4 inch diameter
- 10,000-lb Or more axles: 5 inch diameter
Your bearing combination could also be used to get a good idea on the axle capacity if you identify the bearings. Regarding the leaf springs, a higher capacity leaf spring won't hurt but you want to be careful to not go overboard. If the capacity is significantly higher than the axles you will end up with a really rough ride and a bad towing experience.

Thank you, found it. #3500lb. Was looking at the leaf springs and noticed they are 1/2 @ #1750 per spring. So assuming with the two sharing load that makes the #3500? Want to be clear because I carry #3000-#3200 on this trailer and don't want to overload anything. Just never done this before, saw the youtube videos and it looks very DIY do-able. Don't want ignorance to bite me tho :).
