Expert Answers about Kuat

  • What is the Difference Between the Kuat NV 2.0 and the Older Version of the Rack
  • There were quite a bit of updates for the new NV which Kuat spent three years working on. One of the biggest differences the new Kuat NV 2.0 part # NV22G has over the previous version is that the wheel cradles can now accommodate tires up to 4.8 inches in width. The hitch pin design allows you to install the rack without any tools instead of needing a wrench for the anti-rattle bolt. The foot release lever can now allow the rack to tilt down for more access to the rear cargo area....

  • Why a Wheel Mounted Platform Bike Rack is Preferred to a Frame Mount
  • Generally speaking wheel mount only bike racks are preferred. Especially for people with carbon fiber bike frames since frame mounts aren't recommended at all with them otherwise damage could occur. For other frame designs people still prefer them because there is no frame contact. People with suspension also prefer wheel mount as well. Loading is also easier because when the wheel mount is lowered you just set the bike in the tray, raise the wheel mount and then secure it to the wheel....

  • Comparing the Yakima HoldUp, Kuat NV 2.0 and Thule T2 Classic Platform-Style Bike Racks
  • I've linked you to product demonstration videos of all three bike racks. The best of the three racks will depend on the features you're interested in and which features you find most important. First some similarities. All three racks are capable of folding up against the rear of the vehicle when the bikes are removed, and all three can tilt rearward with the bikes in place, allowing easier access to the rear trunk or liftgate of the vehicle. All three racks include hitch locks of some...

  • What's the Difference Between the Kuat NV 2.0 2-Bike Rack and the Kuat NV 2.0 Base Bike Rake
  • The Kuat NV 2.0 2 Bike Platform Rack, # NV22G, and the Kuat NV 2.0 Base 2-Bike Platform rack, # BA22B. are both very similar bike racks. Both racks can be expanded to a 4-bike rack, # NA22G add-on for the NV 2.0 and # BA02B for the NV 2.0 Base, and both racks have very similar specs. The NV 2.0 # NV22G does include,as you stated, the bike repair stand. The # NV22G, when installed in the hitch, will sit closer to your vehicle when folded down then the NV 2.0 Base bike rack. Both racks...

  • How to Use a Kuat NV for a 1-1/4 inch Hitch in a 2 inch Hitch
  • Kuat does not offer hitch adapters for the NV bike racks, but there are some alternatives. If you are needing an adapter to use the Kuat NV, # N102, that you referenced in a 2 inch receiver, then I would recommend looking into a hitch reducer like the Brophy 2 Inch to 1-1/4 Inch Reducer, # HT02. This will insert into your 2 inch receiver and provide a 1-1/4 inch receiver for your bike rack. Due to the design of your bike rack shank there really isn't a way to use an anti-rattle device...

  • Kuat Transfer or Kuat Sherpa 2.0 Comparison
  • The Kuat Sherpa # SH22G is about 5 lbs lighter than the Kuat Transfer part # TS02G but the biggest thing that I really like about the Sherpa is what you already mentioned. It is rock solid when traveling. There is little to no movement of the rack with bikes loaded when you hit bumps as you noted in the test course videos for both which I attached as well. I've watches quite a few test course videos and nearly every rack has at least a little bit of movement. The Sherpa has almost none....

  • Kuat NV 2.0 Bike Rack Adapter for 1-1/4
  • I have the perfect solution for you if you have a Kuat NV 2.0 Bike Rack, like part # NV12G, with a 1-1/4 inch shank to fit the Draw-Tite Max-Frame 2 inch Receiver # 75699 on your 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The people at Kuat thought these kind of scenarios through and have made an Adapter # D101 for situations just like yours. This will allow you to carry your Kuat bike rack with a 1-1/4 inch shank in your 2 inch trailer hitch receiver. If you don't have the 2.0 version of the NV then...

  • Will the Kuat NV 2.0 Bike Rack For 2 Inch Hitches Fit a Jeep Wrangler
  • Yes, the 2 inch version of the NV 2.0 bike rack is part # NV22G. The clearance needed for the NV 2.0 measures 10-1/2 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the nearest part of carrier when in down position and 7 inches when it is folded up. To determine whether this bike rack will work on your vehicles, you will need to take a measurement on each. Measure from the center of the hitch pin hole to a point just past the spare tire, or any other obstruction you will need to clear....

  • Platform Bike Rack Recommendation for Carrying 4 Bikes with Fenders
  • For a bike with fenders I would not recommend using a bike rack that uses wheel mounts to secure the bikes. I would recommend you go with a frame mount bike rack. Check out the Swagman Quad Platform-Style 4 Bike Carrier # S64692. This rack is similar to the Kuat NV4 Bike Rack # N101-103 that you referenced except it secures the bikes by the frames instead of the wheels.

  • Comparison between Kuat Transfer and Swagman Chinook Bike Racks
  • Between the Kuat Transfer part TS02G and the Swagman Chinook part # S64683 I would go with the Transfer mainly because it only touches the bikes at the tires whereas the Chinook grabs the frame of the bikes when securing. Also the Transfer is 10 lbs lighter at 37 lbs when compared to the Chinook. Swagman and Kuat are both excellent brands. Typically Kuat is referred to as a higher end rack company whereas Swagman does a great job offering bike racks that perform well but maybe don't...

  • Differences Between Kuat NV2.0 Bike Racks BA22B and NV22B
  • The Kuat NV 2.0 part # BA22B is basically the stripped down version of the # NV22B. The differences are that the BA22B has a matte black finish whereas the other rack has a metallic black finish and a stand to work on bikes in the event you needed to while out on the trail.

  • Dimension/Clearance Dimensions Between Kuat NV and NV Base Bike Racks

For the NV 2.0 here are the dimensions: Closest part of rack when folded down: 10-1/2" Closest part of rack when folded up: 7" Farthest part of rack when folded down: 33" Farthest part of rack when folded up: 18-1/2" For the base model here are the dimensions: Closest part of rack when folded down: 11-3/4" Closest part of rack...

  • Kuat Sherpa # S101 vs Saris Freedom SuperClamp 2 Bike Rack # SA4025
  • When it comes to a battle of build quality and features between the Kuat Sherpa, # S101, and the Saris Freedom SuperClamp 2 Bike Rack, # SA4025, the winner in my opinion is Kuat. Although the Saris Freedom SuperClamp 2 Bike Rack, # SA4025, is a great bike bike, the Kuat Sherpa, # S101, just seems to be built to higher quality standards. Another feature that sets it apart for me is the tilting feature which allows you to tilt the carrier down with bikes loaded for full access to the truck/hatch...

  • Lightweight Platform Bike Rack Recommendation Kuat Sherpa 2.0 vs. Saris Freedom SuperClamp
  • The Kuat Sherpa 2.0 part # SH22B is a great lightweight bike rack. Due to it's lightweight construction, wheel clamps that allow for securing bikes without touching the frame, and integrated cable lock it's pretty hard to beat this rack. Typically the only down side to a platform bike rack is the weight. Since this rack is actually pretty light you get the best of both world's. I would highly recommend this rack for you. And I wouldn't let the 40 lb per bike capacity scare you in any way....

  • Availability Of Hitch Bike Rack To Fit On the Rear Of a Travel Trailer
  • When using a 2-inch hitch adapter that clamps to your 4-inch square RV bumper on a travel trailer you will not want to exceed the limits of your bumper. The bumper towing and tongue capacities may be indicated on the bumper itself, but if not you could check your trailers owner manual or contact the manufacturer of your travel trailer. Also remember when using a bolt-on adapter your bumper needs to be a 4x4 inch continuous-weld steel bumper. It cannot be used on spot welded or aluminum...

  • Best Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2010 Honda Element

  • Can the Kuat NV # N105 Be Used on Bikes With Front Fenders
  • As long as the fender is tightly installed on the bike and the hook is attached to the fender as close as possible to the top tube of the bike, the N105 should carry the town bike you mentioned with no problem whatsoever. I spoke with one of my contacts at Kuat, who uses the very same rack to carry his wifes bike that has fenders, and he says it works very well. The inside of the hooks are padded, buy you can place a towel or other piece of cloth between the hook and the fender if you...

  • How Do You Remove the Kuat Bike Rack Shank Adapter
  • The Kuat bike rack shank adapter # D101 is held on to the bike rack shank using 2 allen head screws. You would just need the appropriate size allen wrench to unscrew them from the shank and then you can take the adapter off and use the bike rack in a 1-1/4 inch receiver.

  • Differences Between Kuat Sherpa 2.0 and Older Sherpa, Comparison to Thule T2 Classic
  • Kuat makes some of the nicest bike racks around the new Kuat Sherpa 2.0 part # SH22G is basically an updated version of the Sherpa # S101 which was highly reviewed by our customers. The new Sherpa is lighter (by 8 lbs for a total weight of 32 lbs), has updated wheel cradles and updated wheel hooks as well. This rack would work well for you on your 2015 BMW X5 as long as you have hitch like the part # 75600 installed on it. The hitches for your vehicle sit quite a bit lower than the bottom...

  • Will the Kuat Transfer Bike Rack Hold Up Against Corrosion if Left Out in Rain Frequently
  • The Kuat Transfer is steel which means that it is susceptible to corrosion but only if the powder coating gets scraped off. If that happens then spraying some paint on it will help stop corrosion from starting. The Hollywood Racks TRS # HR3000 is made with both aluminum and steel parts. Aluminum is naturally corrosion resistant and the steel is powder coated so it is a good option around the same price as the Transfer. If you want a rack that is mostly aluminum I recommend the Kuat...

  • Using Hitch Extender with Kuat NV Bike Rack to Clear Spare Tire on 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
  • When an extender is used, we typically advise that the tongue weight capacity of the receiver is decreased by 50 percent. In many cases, 50 percent of the original tongue weight capacity will be sufficient to carry the rack and the bikes placed on it. Due the the relatively heavy weight and long length of the Kuat # N101-103, Kuat does not recommend using an extender. When you use an extender, not only are you increasing the distance between the load and the receiver which increases...

A bike adapter bar is specifically designed to help you carry bikes that have odd or smaller shaped frames safely on a bike rack. The adapter bar will attach to your bikes seat post and the handle bar post. I have attached a video showing how this adapter bar works for you to check out.

Both the SuperClamp and Sherpa will fit both your 2007 BMW 530 and your 2010 Volvo XC60. The Kuat Beta, part # B202-114, and Thule Helium Aero, part # TH9042, will both fit Class I hitches.
