Question:
Hi, Im interested in purchasing a rugged swing-away 2 hitch extender for our 2021 Sprinter Class B Van. We plan to carry to medium weight e-bikes 60-70lbs and need access to the rear doors. Will I need a heavy duty unit like the Kuat XD model or would a standard swing-away like the Yakima backswing or Kuat V2 pivot be adequate? We are primarily on paved roads but they can be rough at and some gravel and campground entry roads that can also be rough at times. Ive heard of damage to standard swing arms when carrying e-bikes. Any suggestions?

Hey Mike! I think most of the stories from damage come from really rough roads or off-road scenarios. I wouldn't expect a standard swing away like the Yakima BackSwing # Y02483 to have an issue unless you exceed the weight capacity. If we assume your bikes are at the high end of 70 lbs, and you have a heavier 50-60 lb bike rack like the OnRamp LX # Y88DJ, you're still well under the 250 lb capacity of the BackSwing or Kuat Pivot 2 # PVD20B and # PVP20B.
At the same time, e-bikes aren't cheap. If you really want to protect yourself against potentially harsh road conditions the Kuat Pivot XD Heavy Duty Swing Away # KU37KR is the better choice. It carries a higher cost, but you will gain that additional security with the better build and higher 350 lb capacity. If you're out there full time this is a solid investment that will last.
It is also important to remember that all of these adapters will reduce the capacity of your hitch by 50%. Make sure your hitch has the tongue weight capacity to handle the e-bikes, bike rack, and the weight of the adapter.
Where are you headed next with your Sprinter?

Thanks for the update, we’re off to the Canadian Rockies in the fall with an extension to Vancouver Island, Oregon and then back to the central US. Have appreciated the Canadian hospitality in the past and hope that relationship can be supported going forward!
