Weight Distribution Diagram

Create a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.

Friction Sway Control

The included friction-style sway control unit reduces trailer sway caused by winds, passing traffic, curving roads, or sudden maneuvers. As soon as your trailer begins to move out of line, the friction pads inside the unit touch one another and create resistance to help prevent further side-to-side movement. To install the unit, simply mount the ball-and-plate assembly to your trailer's frame with the included self-tapping screws, and attach the sway control ball to the head of your weight distribution hitch. Then attach the bar to both of the balls and secure it in place with the included clips.

Forged Steel Spring Bars

The round spring bars are made from forged steel, giving them a distinct advantage over typical cast steel bars. Forging is a process where thermal and mechanical energy are applied to the steel, resulting in a finished product that is more resilient to impacts and is stronger in terms of shear strength. Simply put, these spring bars do a superior job of helping to hold your trailer in line because of their added strength and durability.

Built-In Grease Zerks

Built-in grease zerk on the Curt weight distribution system head assembly

The system's head features 2 built-in grease zerks so that you can easily lubricate the spring bars without having to remove them from the head assembly. The grease zerks are located on each of the shafts that encase the spring bars. Simply use a grease gun (sold separately) to inject grease into each of the zerks.

This definitely will help level out your load. I purposely bought one that is heavier than our travel trailer, but I am glad I did, because I am able to nearly level my pull vehicle and travel trailer straight. Together with the friction sway control, I can drive from 55mph to 65mph depending on the wind and load from addition cargo. Before 50mph was about all I could go. Instructions were good. Assembly was straight forward. I would buy again.

I bought a car and my son and I drove to Atlanta and picked it up. The round trip was 1644 miles. The hitch worked fine.

It works great. The only problem it is heavy to install

by:

Overall this is a good weight distribution hitch. I had a previous hitch but I needed a higher rating so I got this one. I stuck with the curt brand because I liked my old one so much. I have towed my campers from Ohio all the way to Texas, Florida, Colorado, and Maine. I will have to say I will stay with the Curt brand but there are a few things they could fix.

PROS: easy assembly
Torsion bars are easy to put in
Very sturdy
Sway control works like a charm(no creaking eitber)

CONS: Hard to pull on the release for the torsion bar
Very small notch where the chains sit and they keep slipping when i try to pull the chains up for tension

by:

Couldn’t be happier with this product. Works as advertised. I was told by some people that I would get what I paid for, meaning I needed to spend $500 to $600 to get quality, not in this case. I tow a 30 foot camper with a Dodge Ram 1500 with no issues at all. I wish I had a picture of the truck without the weight distributor hooked up....it’s not good!!!

by:

This hitched worked very well. I drove 6200 miles pulling an RV, 34 days on the road. No issues with the hitch, did its job. I was able to hook it up easily after each overnight stop.

Bought this about 2 years ago for a trailer that doesn't get used all too often, but is used very intensely when it does. I bought it because this is a very heavy trailer, and stands 10.5 feet tall. I made one 500 mile trip without it, and got pulled around by by anything that would pass me. I constantly had my hand on the brake controller to be ready to stop a sway situation. Seriously, that was stressful! Once I got to the destination, I immediately purchased this for the return trip. Thousands of miles later, I only regret not getting this right away! This unit has made ALL THE DIFFERENCE! It took a situation that was miserable and made it more than manageable! If your trailer is really tall, I would recommend getting the additional sway control bar, because I did not do so, and I think mine has incurred accelerated wear managing this wind sail behind my truck, but it IS doing a great job regardless!
Setup for a rig like this is pretty involved, in that it adds a lot more steps to the hitching process, but none of them are all that challenging. If you have not used a rig like this before, don't let putting tension on the spring bars spook you. It is a good system, you can trust how it operates, just keep you hands clear and you will be just fine. I put a jack under the truck hitch and take lots of tension off the rear springs of the truck, then install the spring bars.
Factoring in the extra steps to setup, lubrication and care, and extra expense of buying this unit, I don't tow that trailer without this anymore. In my mind it is not even an option. I had a friend of mine tell me one time that, he was pretty much to the point where he wouldn't tow anything over 4k lbs. bumper pull, without sway control at the very least... I am in his camp now. This has completely changed towing my trailer. I went from dreading every mile and passing car (those semi trucks though! yikes!) to enjoying the drive again! I said is wrong earlier, this was not an extra expense. This is necessary, so appreciated!
Thank you etrailer, you guys have been outstanding over the years!

Bought the weight distribution hitch a year ago. Works flawlessly. It’s a beast. I have a 14kw trailer and it handles everything I have put on it. The truck does not squat when the trailer is loaded and the steering remains stable.

I received package on Wednesday it was patched together with pieces of cardboard and tape. No parts list or instructions, down loaded those from internet. There are parts missing. I need these parts to assemble hitch.

I’ve ordered from eTrailer multiple times and they’re always incredible. Really nice to have videos, pictures and detailed Instructions. Super fast shipping, great communication and customer service is always very helpful. Anyone who asks me for towing accessories I send them here. I will always order from here for my trailers or towing vehicles.

by:

I actually ordered the wrong hitch by mistake and had to return it. I received the shipment fast but the box was completely torn and parts just fell out on the driveway. I ordered a second hitch and again it was fast but the box was shredded. In order to return the first hitch I had to pay UPS repackage it.

by:

Works as expected, nothing over and above normal. The first time I used it one of the spring clips that retain the torsion bar in the sleeve broke and I was directed to buy a repair clip. Not impressed!

by:

Works great, easy to install and leveled out my pickup. I can definitely tell a difference driving because I have so much more control of the vehicle through my stand wheel and braking by adding this weight distribution system.

by:

Very happy with the hitch. And service & shipping were excellent. Arrived within just a few days of ordering, packaging was great. Will be a return customer.

by:

My package showed up torn up and not sure if I'm missing parts because there's no instructions included. Makes it very hard to install. And when i try to call your number (Tried three times) i get some medical device number. Very disappointing as i wanted to install this weekend.

I am still very pleased with the hitch. The clips that hold the brace bars up are not a very good design. I have rigged them up a couple times so I can use the load leveler.

I purchased this hitch before a very long road trip from Fl. up into Wy. I was mainly interested in the ability to adjust the height of the ball, and the sway control I was pulling a 29' travel trailer with a F-250 truck. I did try the load leveler bars but the truck only sagged a 1/2", so I didn't bother. If you have never used this type of leveler before they have a tendency on a bumpy road to make the ride worse and you can beat your trailer to death if the road is really bad. Now granted I did overdue it on the hitch, I could have gotten by with a 10k hitch, but my rig was just over 10k loaded, it would ride softer with the smaller leveler bars, the bars are FAT with this hitch. All in all the height adjustment worked great, and even though they recommend 2 sway control bars for trailers over 27' it worked great also. I was running 65-70 mph with a 20+ mph wind hitting us sideways and the sway bar worked great. I probably will order another sway bar and install it on the other side, they are designed to accept 2. The specs claim that you can't back up with the sway bar locked, well I was able too. I have had other construction trailers that you could not, in fact you can bend the frame if your not careful. I used the extremely easy to follow instruction and did as they said, which is to have a spotter watch the trailer as you SLOWLY BACK THE TRAILER INTO JACK KNIFE POSITION. All went well; so I just left it tightened up most of the time. This is a well built easy to use system and I would definitely recommend this to anyone in need of a height adjustable, sway control and load leveler ability hitch. I towed over 6k miles in 4 weeks and have no complaints.

Hitch works like it's supposed to, pulls our 12,000lb tag like a boss.

by:

After a year and a dozen or so trips with this system I gave up and went with a different product that has been much better for me. Weight distribution never seemed to be sufficient and the sway control was nearly non-existent. I hate to think that I put myself and my family at risk just to save a couple hundred bucks by going with this system instead of something that worked for us. I can't say that I'd recommend this to anyone. If you're trying to save money because this system is more expensive...all I can say is that you get what you pay for.

by:

The order was correct and early on deli very

by:

Load leveling hitch and ball was as advertised, at the lowest price I could find anywhere (online or locally). Super durable heavy weight construction that made pulling large trailers a breeze without swaying, and level with vehicle even while using a standard 1500 Suburban with eBrakes.
Delivery was quick and painless.... I couldn't ask for anything more from an online purchase than what I got from etrailer.com
I would definitely purchase from them again for any product I need.

by:

Don’t know what I was thinking not having one of these.
My 1971 Avion pulls so easily with this I sometimes forget its back there.
It’s a must have.
The weight is balanced between the tow vehicle and the trailer and the anti sway bar is a much needed added bonus.
If you don’t have a weight distribution and anti sway bar you are asking for trouble.
These are trouble preventers.

We purchased the hitch to haul our 30' travel trailer using our F150. I called and asked questions prior to purchase and the rep. was extremely friendly and knowledgeable and assisted in our purchase. Very happy with the hitch and the assistance I received and would definately purchase from etrailer.com again. Thanks

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System For 8K Travel Trailer Behind 2012 Toyota Tundra
When selecting a weight distribution system you want to know the total tongue weight. That is the tongue weight of your fully loaded ready-to-tow trailer added to the weight of any cargo placed behind the rear axle of your towing vehicle. Choosing a system rated too high will result in a stiff uncomfortable ride and a system that is not big enough would be useless. For an 8,000-lb trailer the tongue weight can range from 800 to 1,200-lbs. The Curt MV Weight Distribution System, part #...

A weight distribution system does distribute some of the trailer's tongue weight to the vehicle's front axle but determining how much it actually moves up there is a little involved since there isn't a way to show this on a tongue weight scale.
