Pro Tip: Before you invest in a weight distribution hitch, make sure your cargo is evenly loaded in your trailer to keep the weight balanced. If you still have a hard time even after balancing your tongue weight, a weight distribution hitch should help.
Yeah, we hate using snap-up levers too. For decades, they've really been the only way to get the trunnion bars into place on the L-brackets. But this method method isn't without its faults. It's a lot pressure you're working with. And if you don't have a firm grip, you risk losing your footing and, well, let's just say you won't be on vacation anytime soon. Where other manufacturers said, "we've always done it this way", Curt replied, "how can we make this easier for people?" The answer: just combine the handle with the support brackets.
This was by far our favorite feature on this sytem. However, we found that the orange rubber grips came off a bit too easily - even when when we had no tension on the system. With a small rivet or some glue or expoxy inside the handles to hold them in place, you could quickly solve this little problem.
The TruTrack weight distribution system works to stop trailer sway before it begins. This is achieved primarily thanks to the specially designed system head.
On top of the trunnions, there are spring-loaded ball bearings that rest in detents built into the underside of the head. As you travel down the road normally, these ball bearings help to keep the trailer in a straight line by applying pressure inside these detents.
When sway occurs, the trunnions move inside the head, causing the ball bearings to come out of these detents. When this happens, the ball bearings ride along internal grooves in the head as they work to return to the detents to snap the trunnion back in place. This action effectively returns your trailer to center.
For additional sway control, the Curt TruTrack creates a rigid system of steel bars and L-brackets. These rub together to create friction, which prevents your trailer from getting off track behind your tow vehicle. Just keep in mind that, because the steel-on-steel friction of the bars and L-brackets is noisy, don't be alarmed if you hear some banging, creaking, and grinding. It's just the system working to correct sway.
The included hitch pin and clip should be fairly straightforward to use. But we do want to share what we found after we installing this hitch on a couple bumper-pull campers. We concluded that this system will work best if you're close to maxing out the tongue weight rating for this hitch. Otherwise, you may want to look at another system where you'll have a little more tolerance in the adjustable shank portion.
If your trailer is too light, there won't be enough tongue weight to push down on the adjustable shank, creating that nice, neat, round hole to slide the pin through. We had some trouble installing this sytem - even on level ground - because the hole on the system head was eclipsing the one on the horn, making the pin dang near impossible to push all the way through.
Your tongue weight is the first thing you need to know when figuring out which weight distribution system you need. Most people think that if they get the highest-rated system possible, it'll be smooth sailing. But actually, this will create a rigid ride and a bouncing trailer. On the other hand, if the system isn't strong enough, it won't be able to distribute the weight properly, making it virtually useless.
Once you know your trailer's tongue weight, add it to the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Then just choose a weight distribution system rated for that combined tongue weight.
