Is A 1,000lb Rated Blue Ox SwayPro Overkill For A 7,000lb Trailer

Updated 08/03/2024 | Published 08/01/2024

Question:

Hi there, the RV dealer installed the BX 1000 hitch on my 7K trailer for my RAM 1500 pick up. Is this a problem or harmless overkill? They only charged me for the smaller model as they had already installed it by mistake. Thank You, Joe Bustamante

Hey Joseph,

It really is going to depend on how much tongue weight your trailer has. Have you had the tongue actually measured while it's fully loaded? If it was already installed did you already travel a bit with it? Was the ride super stiff or still comfortable for you?

Thanks for the reply. My trailer hitch pin weight is 524 pounds. We just traded our motor home in for a travel trailer. It seemed to ride fine.

@JoeB The Blue Ox SwayPro # BXW1000 has a tongue weight capacity range of 750lbs - 1,000lbs so it's a bit overkill but they could've set the tension lower when installing it. You can give it another trial run and if it feels too stiff you can just swap out the spring bars with their 750lb spring bars # BXW4006.
