Will the Gen-Y Torsion Weight Distribution Shank Work w/a Blue Ox Weight Distribution System?

Updated 02/20/2026 | Published 12/31/2025

Question:

I have the BlueOx BXW1000 anti-sway hitch. Im towing a 5000 lb camper with a 550 lb tongue weight. Will the Gen-y GY54F torsion weight distribution shank that you sell work with the BlueOx by simply swapping out the old shank for the Gen-Y shank? Its that the best choice shank for reducing trailer thump? Are there other parts I need to make it work? Thanks

It sure will Dan. The Gen-Y Torsion Weight Distribution Shank item # GY54FR will indeed replace the shank on your 10,000 lbs Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution Hitch item # BXW1000. The built in rubber torsion cords, along with the pivot points, help deal with road shock to give you a smoother ride. Both fit a 2" receiver and the capacities are going to match up as well.

The only issue I see with changing over to the Gen-Y item # GY54FR is you're going to give up some adjustability with a shorter 6-1/2" maximum drop. The shank included with the Blue Ox item # BXW1000 gives you up to 8". If you're currently at the lowest bolt holes when you connect your weight distribution hitch, you'll want the item # GY55ZR which provides up to a 9-1/2" drop. Sorry, I don't have or see an option for a Gen-Y shank with a 8" drop.

If you're feeling a bunch of chatter or vibrations going through your hitch, I recommend using our etrailer Anti-Rattle Hitch Collar for 2" Hitch Receivers item # e38FV. It's going to embolize the shank inside your 2" receiver. Your vehicle's hitch will require a collar around the end of the receiver.

Please note that your Blue Ox SwayPro item # BXW1000 is rated for a trailer with a 750 lbs - 1,000 lbs tongue weight so you're quite a bit over capacity. If you're experiencing a really stiff uncomfortable feeling while towing you may need to swap out your spring bars for a lower capacity set like the item # BXW4006, which have a 550 lbs - 750 lbs tongue weight range.

What vehicle/s do you tow with?

Hey Dan, how did the Gen-Y torsion shank work out with your Blue Ox setup? Did it help smooth out the ride and cut down on the trailer thump? Your results could really help others looking to reduce road shock in a similar setup.

@JerredH It's hard to determine which of the Gen-Y Torsion Weight Distribution Shanks will work for my setup. It's too expensive of an item for me to just trial and error try. I have a picture of my current hitch setup, how do I attach that? This is on a 2024 F150 xlt 4x4. I need about 1” of rise with my BlueOx BXW1000 shank (top of shank to top of ball). The GY54FR i is probably the right one. The GY55ZR looks like the mounting plate hangs down too far. Is the GH-1002 the same as the GY54FR? Do you have a dimensioned drawing for the GY54FR? How much with the ball drop going from unloaded to loaded with a 550 lb tongue weight trailer?

@DanE the # GY54FR is the same as the GH-1002. We don't have a way of knowing how far it will move under load but I can send you the dimensional drawing in a follow up email.
