Will the Sway Control in My 2015 F-150 Work Against My Blue Ox Weight Distribution Hitch?

Updated 09/13/2025 | Published 08/22/2025

Question:

Hello, I have a 2015 F150 super crew with electronic trailer sway control and a 32 foot travel trailer with a Blue Ox WDS and anti sway control hitch. This combination has bad trailer sway and I’ve been told the electronic sway control is fighting the Blue Ox. Have you heard that and if it is true, what type of hitch would you recommend?

Hello Larry,

Yes, I have heard that when you use the Blue Ox (or any other weight distribution hitch) with the OEM sway control by Ford, they will indeed work against each other.

Ford’s Trailer Sway Control works a lot like your truck’s stability control system. It uses sensors to watch for side-to-side movement, and if it feels your trailer starting to sway, it jumps in by lightly applying the truck’s brakes (sometimes one wheel at a time) and cutting a bit of engine power to calm things down.

The key thing to know is that Ford’s system is reactive, it only helps after sway has started. Your Blue Ox hitch, on the other hand, is proactive, it fights sway before it ever gets a chance to build up.

That’s why you run into trouble using both at once. The hitch is working to stop sway early, while the truck waits until sway gets bigger and then suddenly brakes, which can feel like they’re fighting each other. I would shut off the Ford sway control, and just use the Blue Ox WDH.

What Blue Ox System do you have?

Hey Larry, Did you have a chance to turn off the Ford sway control and rely solely on the Blue Ox hitch? I'm curious to know if that helped reduce the trailer sway for you. Your experience could really help others facing similar issues.

@KateF Yes and it did help but didn’t completely resolve the problem.

@LarryC Another reason why a trailer can have such bad sway is by uneven loading. When your trailer is fully loaded you want your tongue weight to be 10-15% of your overall trailer weight. An uneven load will cause severe white knuckling while driving.
