Reduced rear axle sag with Timbren suspension enhancement

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above your rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the leaf spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Action of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's-side or passenger's-side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

Trailer swaying as it is towed behind a truck

Because your vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi) because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren SES

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Timbren Front and Rear Suspension Enhancement Systems Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Timbren line of suspension enhancement systems. Any time that we add weight to our vehicle, it's going to put a lot of strain and stress on the suspension, especially if we're towing a heavy camper, trailer, or we have a heavy load in the back.Tends to have the back end squat down, which again, it's going to put that strain and stress on the rear suspension because not only are we asking it to hold up the weight of the vehicle, but everything else that we add on to it. Which that can arise a lot of different issues. The front end is going to be getting pulled off, which will misalign our headlights, and our tires won't have as much contact, so our steering and braking is going to be diminished. But tat;s where timbrens are going to come into play. They're going to provide us that extra support so that when we do have those heavy loads, the back end doesn't sag down quite as much, and it's not putting so much stress on the back end. By doing that, the front end's not going to rise up, which means our headlights will be in line and our tires will have the correct amount of contact and pressure, so our braking and steering isn't affected.

And they're going to do that all while making our ride more comfortable with that extra load. Our timbrens are going to provide us the support we need by replacing our factory jump stops and mounting in between the frame and the axle. Now, yours may look different, so you want to double check inaudible 00:01:20 fit guide for your specific application. Now, each one of our timbrens is going to feature a steel bracket. They're all going to have black, powder coat finish on them to resist that rust and corrosion or any other kind of chemicals that may be on the road. They're going to have a hollow, rubber ayon 00:01:36 spring that's going to take a lot of that pressure and strain off of the rear suspension.Whenever we do load our vehicle down, the space between our frame and our axle is going to get smaller. That's where our spring is going to make contact with the axle, and it's going to start compressing.

Now, they are progressively rated, so if we have a small load or a light load, it's going to have a little soft engagement. But the further it gets compressed, the harder and stiffer it becomes, giving us the support we need with those heavy loads. And since they are rubber, they're going to have a lot of give to them, which means they're going to give us the support we need. But at the same time, they're going to give us some more cushion and absorb some of the road shock as we drive. And since the rear ones here aren't in constant contact with our aXle, it is going to provide us the same ride quality when it's unloaded. Our timbrens are going to work independently from each other from side to side. That way, if we have an off center load, it will help compensate for that, but at the same time, if we take an evasive maneuver or a really sharp turn, this is going to help reduce that body roll and some of that sway feeling that we get going on when we have a lot of added weight. Our timbrens for the rear are going to be a good enhancement for any time you're going to be adding weight to the back of your vehicle, whether it be a heavy trailer, a large load in the back or any other situation where you're adding a lot of weight to the back of your vehicle. Now, timbrens on the front are going to be a little bit different.

They're going to provide us that load-leveling support and make sure the front end doesn't get pushed down too far. However, these typically are going to be in contact all the time, which means it's going to give us that support and help reduce on that body roll all the time, all while absorbing that road shock, giving us a smoother ride. Now, some situations where you'd want that extra support on the front of the vehicle to keep it from getting pushed down too much would be if you have a snow plow or winch, if you flat-tow your vehicle, or if you have any other heavy accessory on the front. This is going to make sure that front end stays where it should be, and again, making sure our tires, braking and steering acts how they should. When comparing the timbrens to other suspension enhancement options like airbags, these are going to be a lot easier to install because we're not going to have to worry about running lines, maintaining air pressure, putting in switches or compressors or any of that. Once these are installed, these are going to be completely maintenance free. However, airbags are going to provide us with a lot more adjustability, whereas our timbrens are not going to have that. That'll finish up your look at the timbrens suspension enhancement systems..

Doesn't get any easier for an install. A jack, some soapy water and a couple pieces of 2x4. In about 5 minutes you're done. Took out almost all sag when I dropped my travel trailer on the ball. Great addition to the suspension. 488109

The product worked great and was very easy to install. The delivery took a little bit longer than I had hoped for, however everything worked out fine. I would highly recommend this product for towing, or if you're putting your vehicle under any kind of a load. E Trailer was fantastic! 561603

Super easy to install on my 2015 Dodge Ram 1500. Followed the directions and watched a YouTube video and they were installed super easy. Product does exactly as it says, took out a small sag in my truck when i had my 5th Wheel loaded. The new ride with a load is excellent and without a load its the same as stock. Great Product! 482723

Great product, quick shipment! Installation was a snap...jacked up the truck from the hitch and pulled out the old bumper stops. I used a little soapy water and put the Timbrens right in with a touch of effort, then lowered onto cut 2x4s as many have suggested. They seated perfectly! Haven’t tested under load, but have no doubt they will work great. I added rear coil helper springs for added safety since I will be towing about 7500 lbs with about 850 lbs in tongue weight, although it’s probably overkill with the WD hitch as well. Better safe than sorry! 509550

Product work very well. The only issue is when you go over big bumps you can feel it hitting the back axel. But it handled the weight load of my trailer perfect. 692211

The installation was super easy and the result was great. I brag on it all the time. What a difference in pulling our travel trailer through the mountains on steep downhill curves without rocking and squishy handling. Also, carrying loads feels firm and confident. With a load or pulling the trailer, it handles like a sports car. I would recommend this product to anyone. 649629

Love these bump stops! Half ton trucks these days just are not made to put anything in the box without having the back drop like a rock. These bump stops keep the truck nice and level at all times when you have a load on. Took 15 minutes to install and worth every penny! 635277

Not sure these were the best thing for my Ram 1500 pulling a 5th wheel. On some roads get a lot of bucking. Just ordered a set of Air Ride 5000's to try next. Larry T 617920

Initially I was very displeased with the product. It did not leave much clearance between the bottom of the part the frame, resulting in a rough ride. After talking to E trailer, they have very good customer service, I cut these down approximately 3/4 of an inch with a hacksaw. I have been working great ever since and are very helpful when pulling my stock and travel trailers. 609916

2016 Saturn Sky

After installing a leveling kit on my truck I found the front end would point at the sky with my new camper hooked to it. After some research I settled on these jounce springs to help prevent so much sag from my Rams car like rear suspension. Took ten minutes to install and wow what a difference. Rear end drops at most 2” and before I was on the bump stops. I did get a fair amount of bounce going down some of the uglier sectioned highways but I blame that on the cheap factory shocks and bad PA roads. Would definitely buy again. 554906

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Product was easy to install, 1/2 hr taking my time. Used a open end wrench and floor jack. My 2018 F350 Super Duty Super Cab 4wd no longer plunges over bumps, it has lost all its rear end sway on turning, carries my load much smoother ( loaded all the time ). Even with the load I always carry, the vehicle sits 1” higher in the rear. Prior to the install I was constantly hitting the rubber stops on my factory overload springs. 520123

Solid Product! Yeah it's a stiffer ride when loaded But that's the sacrifice made to have more control of the haul while underway. Definitely recommend to anyone wanting to stay more level with a heavy boat/trailer setup as in my case. Not that install is hard but removal of spare tire before install, may have helped with space if you don't have a lift. 511931

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I installed these on my 2012 Ford F250 because I have two friends who have them on their trucks and they pull a travel trailer and a fifth wheel camper. I was impressed with the difference it made compared to my truck and camper Parked next to theirs'. I am mechanic and I see no reason why anyone would have trouble installing these them selves. Clean off the Nut and end of bolts before trying to loosen. Spray some WD-40 on the threads. Put on some gloves and use a 15mm wrench to loosen factory nut. Be sure to hold up on the factory bump stop because it has a line up pin that keeps it from turning as you loosen the nut. The driver side is a little more aggravating to get to because of wiring harness but there's plenty of room to use a wrench first then a 3/8" drive rachet and short extension with a good 6point 15mm standard depth socket will speed up removal. Then installing the new parts is a breeze. Just follow directions or etrailer videos on YouTube. Took longer to remove factory bump stomps than to install new ones. Maybe 45 mins total on original ones maybe. Then after preassembly of new ones, it took maybe 20 mins to install completely. Give yourself 1:30 hrs of time and enjoy your truck not sagging around town when loaded. 654107

Second time I've ordered from Etrailer. Super happy AGAIN! Install wasn't bad. Went in tight. (Like they should???? ride is awesome. Truck holds strong at 3/4" lower with load. I love it. Package wasn't in sealed and box was busted up. But, rubber. So who cares???? 651388

Working great. I had read reviews about them being too stiff whem you aren't pulling a trailer, but it seems like they softened up a bit after first putting them on. I felt a few hard jolts going over speed bumps and such the first few days, but now I don't notice them at all when I don't have a trailer attached. They are still improving the ride with a heavy trailer. I'd give 5 stars but my mechanic neighbor had to help me install them because there was something wrong with the bolts that came in the package. It was a year ago and I can't remember the details. Without him I think I could have returned them and gotten a fix and installed them by myself. It's a very simple install when all the parts are in good shape. 549083

got the product when stated , went on simple enough but used google to really see how things went together. Timbren doesn't give very good instructions with their product wish they would put diagram so as to be able to see how brackets go, but happy so far haven't put load on the truck yet that's coming up with a trip in august with my 30ft camper and truck loaded for trip guess will come back and let you know how the product works after the trip , but etrailer delivered when they said they would thanks will keep you in mind for future purchases. 544811

Ordered these (6,000 lb Kit) to cure getting too nose high when towing after installing a Bilstein 5100 Level Kit on my 2016 F150 SuperCrew 4x4 (front struts set on max 2.10" setting sitting nearly perfectly level). Tow a 29' overall length travel trailer (~5,500 lbs) and for work we use a 20'x8' enclosed trailer (~9,000 lbs when loaded). Use a WD hitch, but still get the nose up when pulling both. Install was easy. Read through the instructions and watched a video before they came in. Crawled underneath and installed in about 30 minutes after I received them. Didn't remove the spare or the heat shield like the video I watched showed. A lift would have made it easier of course, but can be done in the driveway if you like doing stuff yourself. Used the included spacer and have about a 1" gap, which falls in the advised .5" to 1.5" range from the instructions. I haven't gotten to use them with the work trailer, but I have pulled the travel trailer and they do exactly as advertised, cures the sag, and nose doesn't go up at all. May be slight nose up with the work trailer, but I wouldn't believe it will be like before. Driving while hooked up feels smoother, too, with less body roll/lean in turns. So, overall satisfied with the purchase. The only reason this is getting 4 stars is that, like others have stated, the parts that were painted left a lot to be desired. Very sloppy with some areas that were already flaking off and one part had a spot that was completely missed by paint. The piece that goes underneath the axle to secure the contact plate is not even painted, it's just raw metal. So, I'm curious about what that will look like after one salty winter here in MO. I may find some time before the winter hits and take everything off and do some painting myself, but for $215 you'd kind of think that wouldn't be something to worry about doing with a brand new part. 543563

After 1 year, I’m still very satisfied. Have towed many times with them and the truck stays right at level. This will be something I order for every truck I get in the future. Improves towing without the cost of airbags. I didn’t have to wait more than a few weeks for the rust to appear, though. Had to take everything off and apply a couple coats with some industrial grade Rust-o-leum paint and have been doing good so far. Frustrating to have to do that, but at least I know to do it every time in the future.

My vehicle is a 2002 Tahoe and there was a fair amount of rust to deal with, making the installation more difficult than the video shows. The ride is somewhat bouncy, not sure they are seated completely but they do help with the sagging when I hookup the trailer. 92933

This product has performed exactly as advertised. We pull a fifth wheel rv with a hitch weight of 2300 pounds. After adding the Timbren Rear Suspension System to our Ford F-250, our truck sits perfectly level when hooked up. We feel that it was a much more cost effective way to keep our truck level as opposed to installing an air bag system. 344559

I still like the suspension product that I purchased from Timbren. It helps keep my vehicle level when we tow our 12,500 lbs fifth wheel RV with a hitch weight of about 2400 lbs, although when I purchased the product we were towing a lighter model. I have been thinking about ordering the heavier duty model you offer to help off set the increase in weight of our new trailer.

In my opinion these were a complete waste of money. I could discern no difference between them and the stock bumpers. Unfortunately it was a number of weeks after I installed them that I actually hauled our gooseneck horse trailer. My mistake for not immediately testing them after installation. I had the the Ride Rite system from Firestone on my previous Ford and was very pleased with that product. After reading reviews for the Timbrens I thought I could save some money by going that route. Big mistake on my part, I would never recommend this product instead I would steer anyone needing trailering suspension parts to buy the Ride Rite system. When finances allow I will be removing the Timbrens, throwing them in a dumpster and purchasing the air bag system. Overall I have been very pleased with Etrailer and will order from them in the future. 518512

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Came just as advertised. Waiting to install. As an aside: You might want to make sure all box sides are securely taped as the USPO delivered the box with the un-taped side completely pulled away from the box and the suspension parts were pushing out of the box. 504944

Fairly simple to install. Did not have to Jack up my 18 f150, but would have probably made it easier. Install was pretty straight forward bolt on operation. I Haven't pulled my 28 ft camper yet. The bump stops I removed were 1/3 the size of the new ones. They should work real well. No noticeable ride difference with no load. Thanks. 641299

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I purchased the TDF15004B and TDR1500DQ products for my 2016 Ram 1500. Towing is way better and overall handling is improved. These products installed just fine. The directions were clear and concise. Etrailer has a helpful video series as well. Thanks to the staff at Etrailer for the great customer service and follow-up. Jj. 288500

Great! I appreciate the follow-up. No complaints, performance is excellent. Ive recommended both of these products and informed them E-trailer is the source.

I had bought these timbrens and the weight safe hitch with the 8” drop from etrailer. I was quite please by both products. Installation of the timbrens was very easy, only took 30-40 minutes to change out bump stops in my garage.I hauled a Uhaul trailer with a Jeep over 300 miles, with no issues. The timbrens worked great, no issues with the rife. And I really like the weight safe hitch. I recommend checking out these two products from etrailer. Thanks etrailer. 642864

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Before installation my truck body would hit the axel where the old bump stop had been destroyed on the driver side. After installing, I notice that my rides are smoother, there is less body roll, and when the truck is full there is less bouncing off the body. I had this professionally installed and have not had any more issues with the body roll, or the body hitting the axel. I have installed new shocks and the rear suspension is stiff when empty, but when it is full I do not have any issues. Great product, worth every penny. 421402

Installed on a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country over 2 years ago. They work as promised. I have hit some tough spots on the road fully loaded and the back never bottomed out. They stabilize the rear and make the overall ride quality better, especially under load. 612756

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

The "Timbren's" was one of the best things I did to the F-350 SWR to improve the ride and handling while pulling a 3 horse goose-neck horse trailer with living quarters. Follow the instruction and they are easy to install in a short time. I liked them so much that I put them on my F-250 also. 428415

After a year it was still the best improvement I have made to the trucks. The Timbren Vehicle Suspension is something I should have installed long from the beginning. The ride is a little more stiff when empty, but thats not why the system was purchased for. Saved me from buying a $500 air bag system. I would recommend this product to anyone who hauls heavy loads.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Best available for Kia I wish I would have known about this product sooner. I have a Kia Sedona and there are only 2 suspension aids available. I previously had the Firestone airbags and don't recommend. The bags and compression fittings leak and installations complicated. This was the only other option so I gave it a try. Very glad I did. They do exactly what they say they do. The Sedona doesn't dip nearly as much when I put the trailer on. In fact I had to go to my lower rise hitch so it would sit flat. Ride is solid, but not jarring. I don't really know about the reliability as I've only had them about a week, but it's a very simple concept so I can't imagine problems. They are basically oversized flexible bump stops and have no moving pieces. They seem expensive for what they are, BUT installation is MUCH cheaper than the airbags. It cost me just a bit over a hundred bucks to have them installed at a local service chain (Tuffy). They also are very discrete so your warranty likely won't be called into question. 3579

  • How to Choose the Correct Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement for a 2012 Ram 1500
  • The Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement part # TDR1500DQ is an excellent option for your 2012 Ram 1500 as long it is not a regular cab. If you do have a regular cab then you will want to use the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System part # TDR1500DS. The higher the weight capacity the spring is rated for, the stiffer the spring will be. A softer spring will result in a better ride quality but a stronger spring will give you more support. For your 10,000 lb car trailer, I recommend...

If you need any further clarification, please don't hesitate to ask. In regards to the use of suspension enhancements with a weight distribution system, I can say that a properly installed and rated weight distribution system will not require any further suspension enhancements. If you are still experiencing squat with your current system, I recommend...

  • Timbren helper springs # TDR1500DS will fit your 2018 Ram 1500 and will reduce that sag that you have when towing. The Timbren springs are easy to install and require no maintenance. But they will make the unloaded ride stiffer. The similar SumoSprings Solo, # SSR-307-47, will also reduce sag, are easy to install, and require no maintenance. But with these springs the unloaded ride quality won't be as stiff. If you are looking to get away from air bags either set of helper springs...

  • Rear Suspension Enhancement Helper Springs for a 2014 Ram 1500 4x4
  • Usually the best way to combat vehicle squat is by using an appropriately rated weight distribution system. But on 1/2 ton trucks like your 2014 Ram 1500 weight distribution often isn't enough by itself to completely remove the squat. So we can start by looking at some suspension enhancement and if you still need additional support we can look into weight distribution. For a jounce style helper spring that will have minimal effects on the empty ride quality I recommend the SumoSprings...

The Timbren # TDR1500DQ is not a fit for regular cab models of your Ram 1500, while the # TDR1500DS will fit this model perfectly. If you have the regular cab, you will want to go with # TDR1500DS. If your truck has a Regular cab the you want to go with part # TDR1500DS. If not instead use part # TDR1500DQ. The give being that you will sacrifice some of the ride quality while towing/loaded and the take being that you gain some of the suspensions strength back while towing/loaded. They're confirmed on your Ram as long as you don't have a factory air suspension system. The 6,000 pound Timbrens I think are the way to go.
