Fit up perfectly. Split the old nuts using a right angle grinder with a cutting wheel. Heated the spring enough to soften the plastic bushing and allow the bolt to be pounded out with a hammer. I used an 11/16 drill bit to remove rust and debris from spring end and used a c-clamp to press in the new bronze bushing. Everything else went together like the instructions said. Attached a before and after photo.

Wow. Heavy duty!!! Excellent upgrade! Grease quiets transitions. Easier to Change than I thought. Remember that the bolts are pressed (hammered) in and must be driven out!

Easy to install. The grease able feature is very nice too. Go for it!

Perfect fit. Much better than what was originally on there. The photos show an old linkage compared to a new one.

Parts were one day late from perspective date. but did arrive following day pkg a little banged up but all contents were inside. (parts box should have been packed inside another box to protect small parts loss and damage) all parts were in there. Quality of the parts appears to be excellent, bronze bushings and grease-able pins makes this a great choice for long life

- K71-449-00
by:

These were an exact fit and worked perfectly. Good quality along with grease zerks on every point are a big plus. I recommend this kit to friends.

- K71-449-00
by:

These parts are GREAT. The links are super heavy and the ability to grease them is wonderful. The bronze bushings are very superior to the plastic ones. A few folks complained about having to remove the tires to access the grease fittings. I just installed mine to the inside so all I have to do is crawl under the trailer (or get a kid to do it) and it only takes a few minutes.

- K71-449-00
by:

Great upgrade to your trailer suspension. The equalizers on my trailer were froze and would not move, I had to heat the bolts until the plastic bushings melted, then drove the bolts out. In doing so this left a fair amount of crud inside the spring eyes, I had access to an 11/16" hand reamer so I ran it through the spring eyes, then the bushings slid in with a nice snug fit, and in doing so I did not experience distortion inside the bushings like others have mentioned. I was disappointed to find that the equalizer center pivot bolt did not come with a new nut. The kit shows enough nuts for all the bolts but the nuts only fit the wet bolts. If the kit had included the two 9/16"-18 nuts I would have given 5 stars.

Noah was super helpful with getting us the right sized parts for our trailers! We will definitely be back when we need more!

- K71-449-00
by:

Ah.. now I can tow with confidence knowing my axles are once again equalizing and sharing the bumps as they should be. With the grease-able fittings I also know this is continue for years to come. Feels very heavy duty, trailers well on the trips I've taken so far. Installation was very easy, though to use the brass bushings in the springs I had to drive out the nylon bushing that came in the new springs. This was easy to do with bolt of the right size and the brass bushings -- just tap tap tap and the nylons were pushed out by the brass, all guided and kept aligned with the bolt.

- K71-449-00
by:

I think that was the best thing I could've done by changing out the suspension on my trailer .My trailer is a whole lot quieter to pull now.No problem yet. Good product .

- K71-449-00
by:

The products I ordered arrived ahead of schedule and fit perfectly! The only complaint I have is the packaging. All the components (4 leaf springs, suspension kit, and u-bolts were just thrown into an over sized box, then shipped. When it arrived, the leaf springs were sticking out the sides and there were holes big enough for the smaller boxes to fall out. Fortunately, everything was there. This is the second time I have ordered product is was packed very poorly!

- K71-449-00
by:

Got the kit on time and in good condition - thanks, etrailer! Everything I needed was in the box, along with instructions. I had two minor issues with the kit (it's a Dexter Axle product, so this doesn't reflect negatively on etrailer). The bushings are thin enough that they conform to an out-of-round hole, like I had in the ends of the leaf springs (they're curled into a loop). Because of this, some of the bushings were malformed after being pushed in (I used a C-clamp, not a hammer), so I ended up having to use a round file on a few to make the studs fit. Additionally, all the bushings fit close enough to the studs that I was unable to get grease into them using the grease zerk. The only one that would take grease was the center pivot of the equalizer. Otherwise this kit is a nice, heavy-duty alternative (especially the shackles) to the worn-out pieces that I had.

- K71-449-00
by:

Being that these are fully grease able they will definitely outlast the stock ones. I grease them once a month and there is no signs of wear so far

etrailer- I cant say thank you enough Finally, someone sells a product that is done right. Within 9 months of purchasing a brand new twin 5200 lb tandem axle trailer, i lost an axle due to light flimsy spring shackles that wore through ( no way to grease them either) .I have been towing tandem trailers for the past 30 years, always having undercarriage issues (hangers and equalizers by other companies wearing through one being cheaper and thinner than the next. These are truly Heavy Duty... I can now travel down the road feeling confident that my leaf springs and axles are strong, sturdy and over engineered. etrailer was the only one i found that sold truly Heavy Duty Hardware that is truly over engineered and realistically, under priced... Thanks again etrailer

My factory setup with plastic inserts was worn out after only 10,000 miles. The Dexter trailer suspension equalizer kit K71-449-00 is super heavy duty with brass bushings not plastic. . Wish manufacturers would install this as OEM.

I'm so disappointed that etrailer does not carry full line of Dexter ez lube axles. I live in Ohio and ordered from another online supplier. Even trailer shipped the day I placed my order. 4 days ago. I won't have axles ship from Texas for another 4 days. etrailer is on the ball !! Why don't they carry more parts ?? I'm just waiting and waiting while my business suffers without it's tool trailer.....

Havent installed yet but this is really beefy, and I love the fact that I can grease all the joints now. These brackets are more than double the thickness of OEM.

Comments
A year later and these have been on for 10 months or so. Due to a defect in my trailer mounts, I wasnt able to use the included bushings, but it still is quiter, and beefier than OEM, at about half the price of the local autoparts store.

Ran these over ice and snow on I-40 from Tucumcari to Albuquerque and didn't loose anything inside. If your shackles are rusted and can't be lubed this is the fix for you. Replaced these on a 2003 Mobile Suites fifth wheel.

My kit was shipped fast. I was hoping to get the trailer back on the road in no time but it seems my springs have 9/16 x 3/4 bushings. Another order... The shackles are huge compared to the original and should last a lot longer especially with the grease fittings. Thanks

Pieces I got were excellent

I like the heavy duty shackle links to replace the original shackles the original ones are too lite duty for 8000 lb axles

  • Dexter Suspension Kit For Tandem Trailers With Equalizers Measuring 7-3/4, 6, or 5-3/4
The Dexter suspension kits are high quality and include "wet bolts", bronze bushings instead of nylon and thick shackles. Properly maintained these would likely outlast typical factory kits three times over! To determine which kit is right for you simply measure the distance across the equalizer and use part # K71-449-00 for 7-3/4" long, part # K71-448-00 for 6" long, or part # K71-359-00 for 5-3/4" long. I don't have any information as to what leaf springs are on any one particular trailer such as a 2007 Jayco Jay Flight 29BHS but if they are double eye leaf springs which are the most common then we should have a Dexter Heavy-Duty Suspension Kit for Tandem-Axle Trailers that will work. In order to choose the correct one you just need to make note of the equalizer dimensions; part # K71-449-00 for 7-3/4" long, part # K71-448-00 for 6" long, or part # K71-359-00 for 5-3/4" long.

  • Should Trailer Suspension Bolts be Torqued Down
Since suspension components use lock nuts on the ends of the shackle bolts and the bolts need to be able to allow movement you actually don't want to torque down the bolts at all. You want to snug them up so that there's no lateral play but still allows easy movement of the bolts/shackles so that you don't inhibit the suspension from being able to do what it needs to do.

  • Do Trailer Shackle Bolts Require Splines to Prevent Wear from Occurring
In general shackle bolts turning from use over time does not considerably wear out components. As long as the bolts are greased normally the movement from standard use would not cause them to wear out. The tension of the bolt and nut is loose enough to allow the movement to happen without much friction which also allows the material to not wear out quickly either.
