Rugged, Matte Black Finish

The sturdy steel construction is protected with a matte black finish for added durability. This unique powder coating gives etrailer hitches a carbide-like appearance and a rugged look that sets them apart from traditional glossy hitches. In addition to being rust and corrosion resistant, the tough matte coating hides dirt, scuffs, and dings better than a glossy finish.

Video Transcript for etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 Toyota RAV4

Speaker 1: Today on our 2016 Toyota RAV4, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the etrailer Class III Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number E98864. Here's what our hitch looks like once we have it installed on our RAV4. The cross tube is going to hang just below the bumper, and it is going to be visible, but it is set back a little bit and not that noticeable, but what I really like about our etrailer hitch here is the finish. It's going to have that flat black carbide finish opposed to the high gloss finish that's on a lot of hitches. So, it blends in really nicely at the bottom and it is less noticeable. It's a class III hitch, which means it's going to give us a 2" x 2" receiver tube opening, and give us a lot of different options of any kind of accessory that we want to mount up. Now, the way we're going to mount any of those accessories is to the hitch pin hole here in the side, and it is going to accept a standard 5/8 pin and clip, and while these aren't included in the kit, you can pick them up here at etrailer.com along with locking devices to keep your accessories secure. Now, our safety chain connection points are going to be a loop style welded to the bottom of the receiver tube, and as you can see, we're not going to have too much trouble getting most sized hooks on or off, and have plenty of room to make sure they don't interfere with our hitch pin or locking device.

As far as weight capacity goes, our hitch is going to have a 525 pound tongue weight, which is the maximum downward force at the receiver tube, along with a 3,500 pound gross trailer weight rating. That's the amount it can pull, including the trailer and everything we have loaded on it.Now, it is rated for use with weight distribution systems, and weight distribution is going to be a separate component that's going to be mounted on your trailer, but that's going to bump your weights up. The tongue weight will stay the same, but the gross trailer weight rating is going to go up to 4,000 pounds. With all those numbers in mind, you should always double check with Toyota's owner's manual, and never exceed the manufacturer's recommended weight.I'd like to give you a few measurements, and that's going to help you whenever you're looking at your accessories for your new hitch such as a ball mount, a bike rack, or even a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin holes to the outermost edge of the bumper, it's going to be right about 3-1/2".

That measurement is going to come in handy when you're looking at folding accessories to make sure you have enough clearance and it doesn't come in contact with the rear bumper. From the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening, it's going to be right about 13-1/2". That not only is going to come in handy when you're looking at a ball mount to find the appropriate rise or drop for your trailer, but also at that height, I would recommend a raise shank on either a bike rack or a cargo carrier to give us that little bit of extra ground clearance. Now that we've seen what our hitch looks like and gone over some of the features, let's show you how to get it installed. To begin our installation, we're going to come to the rear driver's side, and we're going to have this appearance panel on the bottom here. We're going to have to remove it. At the very back, we're going to have a couple push pin fasteners.

If we take a flathead screwdriver, we come into the notched area, we can pop out the center section, and that's going to take tension off the clip. Then we can pull the rest of it out.If we move forward on the panel just right behind the rear axle, we'll have a nut that's holding it in place. We can grab a 10 millimeter socket and pull that out. Now, underneath that panel we'll have our tow hook, and it'll be held in by two bolts. So, we'll grab a 17 millimeter socket, and we can pull those out.

On the passenger's side where our muffler is, we're going to have an exhaust hanger right towards the exhaust tip. We're going to want to slide the hanger off, so we get a little bit more room to work with.I'm going to take some spray lubricant. I'm just going to spray the hanger down. Then I'm going to take a pry bar, and using the muffler to pry against, I'm just going to slide that isolator off. Now on the other side of that muffler hanger, we're going to have another exhaust rod that's going to be held in by two bolts. We can grab a 12 millimeter socket, and we're going to pull those out. Now if you come to the bottom of the frame rail, we'll see that we're going to have several threaded holes. We're going to be using the very furthest back one and the very furthest forward one in this group. Now, to make sure there's no dirt, debris, or anything else inside, I'm going to spray a little bit of spray lubricant inside. Then I'm going to take a nylon brush and clean out each one of our weld nuts, and keep in mind, everything we do to one side now, we're going to be doing to the other side as well. Once you have all your weld nuts clean on each side, you're going to want grab one of the bolts from your kit and make sure that you can thread it in easily by hand, and that they're not going to cross thread. Now with an extra set of hands, we're going to lift our hitch up. You want to make sure you're over the exhaust, and we'll line the holes up with the weld nuts in the frame. We'll take one of our bolts with the conical toothed washer. Make sure the teeth are facing towards the hitch, and you want to get at least one bolt in on each side. That way the hitch will support itself and we can get the rest of our hardware in.I'm going to come back with a 19 millimeter socket and tighten all up my hardware. I'll come back with a torque wrench. I'm going to torque all my hardware to the specified amount in the instructions. You want to make sure you repeat that for any remaining hardware. Now we can lift our exhaust up, and we'll slide the rubber isolator back on the hanger. That'll finish up your look at the etrailer Class III Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number E98864 on our 2016 Toyota RAV4.

The hitch was very easy to install and video instructions were perfect. The wire harness wires were not as long as in the video, but overall install was as in the instruction. FYI , the Hybrid battery is in the rear, so a bonus with not having to run the power cable & fuse to the front of the vehicle to attach to the battery. 619518

Had to be flexed outward a bit to fit, frame holes needed to be re threaded, then it bolted right up, should include in description to just read the reviews from start all the info to make it work is here. Good product tho! 634678

My hitch receiver arrived quickly and was nicely packaged. On installation, I discovered the receiver was about 1/2 inch too narrow and the bolt holes would not line up with the nuts in the frame I had to use my car's Jack and a 2x4 to spread the receiver's arms wider apart. Reinstallation went smoothly and the receiver is now securely mounted to the car. Other than that major hiccup, I like the hitch receiver and think it is a good value. 608584

Comments

Receiver hitches are designed so that the mounting flanges have some side to side flexibility, so the hitch can somewhat move along with the car, such as when hitting bumps, etc. This flexibility can allow the flanges to become moved slightly out of place during shipping and handling. This is a fairly common occurrence, and we have written a help article that outlines a few different ways to move the mounting flanges back into position. Ive linked the article below for you.

This review is based on a 2012 RAV4 Sport V6 model:The only issue I had with the hitch was when installing the last bolt, I noticed the mounting hole in the hitch plate/wing was not lining up just right. I had to pull on the hitch to open it's span enough to get this bolt inserted and started. Once started, the bolt took care of itself as far as threading in. The other 2 issues I had were vehicle-related - the mounting holes were not covered so I had to deal with rust/corrosion in the holes (12mmx1.25 tap was the cure), and I had to drop the exhaust in 2 places to get enough room for the bolt that sits right above the exhaust bulge (wd40 on the hangers made life easier). I was able to manage the install myself by laying the hitch across my body, lifting from the middle and starting one bolt on one side, then starting another bolt on the opposite side. Total install did not take very long once I had the holes cleaned out and the exhaust dropped so figure on 15-30 minutes tops IF all goes smooth. Had a delivery issue with the first hitch sent but etrailer customer service was fantastic and took care of it. 537159

Super easy to install. We watched the installation video and it all went exactly the way the video said. Haven’t tested it out yet with a rack, but installation was the scariest part! 658482

The receiver for my Toyota RAV4 was delivered in just a couple of days. Great. I have installed these before on other vehicles I have the ones that require no drilling a straightforward job. I removed the factory installed tie down. Got my son to help lift it in place and install a couple of the forward bolts. That’s where the fun ended. The rear bolts didn’t align with the factory holes. The Rav4 was not damaged to cause misalignment. So, the receiver was either built slightly off specs or bent in shipping. I examined the box it was banged it, didn’t looked damaged enough to bend heavy duty steel. My son said return it, they made it slightly off, get another one. I have pictures of the 1/4” or so the receiver didn’t fit. Not to give up we spent the next hour pushing, prying with the biggest pry bar I could get under the rav4. We bent the receiver enough to get the last bolt in. It was much harder than it should have been so I gave this a Poor rating and can’t recommend it. It’s on and will hopefully serve well for years. I might forget the installation problems when my knuckles heal. Will try to email photos of problem. Just read a few of the reviews on this receiver, I can’t understand why people would give it a good/great rating when it didn’t fit the vehicle. Several people had the same problem I did. When I called for helpi was number 9 in line for tech support. I wasn’t willingly to wait an hour or more. If it is made off specs, make it right!!!!! If it is getting bent in shipping put a piece of 2x2 to stop it from bending. That off spec receiver makes an easy job much harder. Thank for listening. 615666

Comments

When a trailer hitch is constructed, softer steel is used in the side plates as opposed to the harder steel used in the crossbar and receiver tube. This allows the hitch to flex along with the vehicle to a certain degree. This flexibility can also allow the hitch to get slightly bent out of position during shipping and handling. The good news is that its very easy to fix this if you know a few tricks as shown in the linked article.

2008 Toyota RAV4 hitch install:Although it took me the better part of the afternoon, the hitch (when the holes finally lined up) was installed in a few minutes. Instructions and online videos were extremely helpful. The hitch arrived in good condition but on first attempt at installing, the holes were way off. I called eTrailer (late Saturday afternoon) and the phone was answered right away. I spoke with a technician who said that was normal – the wings are somewhat flexible and often get bent during shipping. He gave me advice on several methods to push the wings out. I used the car jack and a couple of pieces of wood to push / bend the wings out. After two adjustments, the holes lined up and the hitch fitted evenly and centered on the vehicle. I did have to re-tap one of the holes because I tried to force the bolt at a slight angle on the first install attempt and wound up crushing some of the threads. Other than that, the bolts went right in. I used a torque wrench but not sure if I did that right. Everything is as tight as it appears to allow so I am sure it is fine. Now I need to get a bike rack. 537093

Received my hitch but it didn't fit correctly. Called tech support and they told me the hitch could have "flexed" and needed to be bent back out to fit right. I had to beat the sides with a 3 lb. hammer several times to get it to fit! Can't believe that no one at the factory even measured the width to make sure it was adequate. This is not what I expected and the consumer should not have to "customize" the metal to fit right. Very disappointed with the product! 615114

The hanger brackets were bent inwards. Not happy! However there was no visible damage to the shipping package. Bent brackets outwards to make fit. One hour and half later, the install was complete. 545647

Comments

The mounting flanges on a trailer hitch are designed for straight line strength, not lateral strength. The flanges are actually designed to have some give in them, so that if they get flexed during shipping, they can be easily bent back into place. As long as the powder coat didnt crack and there arent any cracks in the mounting flange itself, the hitch will work just fine after being shifted back into place. Ill link to a help article that shows a few different methods of manipulating the hitch back into place, which should be done before installing the hitch.

Got this for my wife's Rav 4. Product is perfect. Bolts thread into existing holes. Took maybe 30 minutes to install. I didn't have to drop the exhaust. You should have a torque wrench as the instructions specificy the bolts be tightened to 86 foot pounds. You can buy one from auto zone for $20-$30 or use there free tool rental service. Also make sure you adhere to your vehicles towing capacity. Just because you put a class 3 hitch on a vehicle doesn't mean it can handle the 3500 tow rating. 2012 Rav 4 is only rated from 1500-2000 pounds. 545435

The hitch was a little bent in shipment judging from the box. The holes were a little out of alignment so the hitch would not bolt up. Stood on the hitch and used a splitting maul to straighten the slightly bent end piece. Then the hitch went right on as advertised. 544601

2015 Toyota RAV4

This was a super easy install. The hitch was well packaged and arrived within 3 days of ordering. Installation took less than 15 min for the hitch itself on my 2009 Toyota RAV4. Other reviewers have noted some issue with holes aligning to the bolt holes in the vehicle frame; I had no problems at all with alignment, and didn't even have to remove the muffler hanger to get all the bolts installed and torqued. I simply left all bolts loose until I had all four started in their holes, and the hitch went into place with no problems. The wiring harness took a bit more time. Although it was not complicated, the need to remove various trim pieces to reach everything took some time. Also, if you have an all wheel drive RAV like I do, running the main power wire to the front of the vehicle on the outside of the body is problematic. Getting around the back axle and differential is difficult as there are not a lot of good places to runt eh wire forward without getting into the suspension NAND drivetrain. I ended up routing the wire along the left side under the door sill trim (there are wire loops already conveniently located there to hold rear electrical system wiring harness); the hardest part of that process was fishing the wire over the rear wheel well, and finding a suitable way to get the power wire fed through the firewall. A four foot piece of stiff wire proved the key to success, as I was able to poke the end through the wire grommet on upper left corner of the firewall, duct tape the end of the power wire to it, and then pull the whole thing back through into the engine compartment. The harness itself fit perfectly and the instructions were sufficient to keep me going in the right direction.Overall, I was pleased with the speedy customer service, fit and finish of the products I received, and the ease of installation. I would recommend this product and company without reservation. 537083

Outstanding communications between etrailer and myself. The videos made available on line were very helpful when dealing with the rusted frame nuts. I ran out and got a 1/2 inch copper pipe wire brush and a 12m - 1.25 tap. The brush and WD40, along with a couple of hours of labor took care of most of the rust issue. A quick ream job and I was back on my back with the hitch on my chest putting in the bolts. I will be contacting Toyota and finding out why they couldn't put a few plastic caps over the factory drilled frame nuts in order to assist in the after factory install of the hitch assembly. I'm a happy camper. Towed home a new log splitter first day. 549647

everything went as per the great step by step written and video instructions. Hole alignment side to side presented somewhat of a challenge in that we had to use a breaker bar to expand it to get the last bolt started. Luckily it was no big deal. 552646

First, very happy with the service from etrailer. The videos and assurance that the hitch would, indeed, fit my vehicle were EXTREMELY helpful. And, of course, free shipping did not hurt. The hitch showed up at my door last night and this morning I had an e-mail from GeorgeJ with a link to the same installation video I'd viewed prior to ordering (made it easy to locate, did not have to go searching). I watched the video again and did the installation this morning.Second, the installation. Yes, everything went exactly as is shown in the video. However, the directions say a pro can install in 15 min; an amateur in 30. I think I was close to 2 hours from opening the box, and getting out the tools to having the plastic piece cut, reinstalled, and the tools put away. Based on the video:a) The plastic cover and tow hook came off exactly as described. The muffler came loose from the hanger exactly as described.b) I did the install in my garage by crawling under the back of the vehicle. Because of that, when I went to install the hitch - muffler side first as shown in the video - the other side was on the floor but I was still able to engage the first bolt on the muffler side. Getting the other 3 bolts in was easy.c) I do have a torque wrench but I was amazed at how much "pull" ft-lbs actually is. I was sure I was going to snap the head of the bolt (they are good size bolts but...) before I ever got . The video pretty much glosses over this part. I would have appreciated a little "hand holding" on this bit in the video, e.g., words that I'm not going to strip the bolt or twist the head off even though it may feel that way.d) Of the 4 bolts the front one on the muffler side gave me the most grief. The muffler just doesn't want to get out of the way.e) I decided to remove the "hook" on the muffler hanger (which seems to serve no purpose) as was shown in another video I watched. Probably could have remained but it came off easily enough. The actual hanger slipped back into the rubber piece very easily.f) Trimming the plastic piece was straightforward. As the video says, take your time. One bit I was not expecting - and those reading will think it silly - is that once installed, the hitch fits VERY tight against the plastic car trim pieces in a couple of places. I did not take the heavy paper on the tubes off before installation thinking it would keep the tubes from possibly getting scratched up during installation. That paper was squeezed so tight between the hitch and the plastic (must be solid metal underneath) that there are still a couple of pieces trapped which I could not remove.Third, the tools. Obviously the installation cannot be done without the proper size sockets (I'm not a big fan of 12 point ones but they were what I had in metric and they worked fine - no heads were rounded). I found my drill motor very helpful especially when it came to getting the initial run-in on those big bolts holding the hitch in place. And of course the torque wrench. Without it I would have quit tightening more in the lower range as that felt pretty darn tight. All in all, a positive experience. 537213

This is a nice, sturdy product. I initially had a fitment issue, but e-mailed etrailer (on a holiday weekend) and got a response and a link to help remedy my problem, which I did without any hiccups. It really speaks of etrailer's customer service when they are willing to help solve my (Joe Internet User's) problem on a weekend. Did I mention, a holiday weekend at that? Most brick and mortars don't offer that kind of support anymore. Anyway... Great product, great company. 667523

Just installed this on my 2008 Toyota RAV4 - which I bought used last week (in 2014). Box arrived very banged up, crushed on one side, cardboard cut by the rack mount edges, held closed with several long stripes of packing tape. But the rack was in perfect condition. Installation was a major pain, but mostly because the original threaded holes had no cover and so were pretty thoroughly corroded. Followed the hints to lube and brush out multiple times, no luck. Eventually bought a tap (12MM, 1.25) and was able to clear the threads. Then the slotted holes in the hitch were about 1/4-3/8" too narrow to attach. Saw a hint in an earlier review, and used my floor jack with a piece of treated scrap lumber to gently pry the arms out a bit. MANY THANKS to whoever posted that hint. The highlights of installation - I did not have to detach the exhaust, was able to just edge it out of the way. And I was able to install it without even jacking up the RAV4 (but I am not a very big guy). And the happy ending? The rack is just right and rock-solid. etrailer service was *extraordinary* - multiple e-mails to keep me informed, complementary upgraded shipping, excellent materials on the web (e.g., videos, dimensions, Q&A...). First-time customer, will definitely be back. 537059

I installed mine by myself this weekend. When I took the hitch receiver out of the box, I was surprised at how hefty it was. This thing is NOT lightweight. Without a second pair of hands, I wasn't sure how I'd get it done. But then I lifted up the passenger side and suspended it from the exhaust bracket with a heavy duty zip tie. Then I put one bolt in the drivers side. Then I returned to the passenger side and cut the zip tie and put those two bolts in. Then I returned to the driver's side and put the remaining bolt in. Then I went back and forth and finger tightened all the bolts. Then I lightly tightened with a wrench followed by my first attempt using a torque wrench. I only wish I knew how to properly use a clicking torque wrench, because I never heard the click and I turned very hard. I'm still not sure if I tightened enough or if I possibly over-tightened. But in any case, it's obvious that this is a solid hitch receiver. Oh, one more thing. I couldn't budge the bolts holding on the tie-down bracket. Luckily I have an air impact driver that I rarely use. That took the tie-down bracket bolts off easily. The other weld nut holes that were needed were all covered with stickers, so no wire-brush cleaning was needed. 537130

I just attached the tow hitch. It is very sturdy and feel that it can bear the heavy load. It is quite heavy. If you have a second hand to help, you can get it done it about 15 minutes after you watch the instruction video. The video was helpful and I knew exactly what I was doing. One thing I would suggest is the tow hitch was delivered barebone. Nothing supports it from bending during shipping. I had a hard time get the bolts aligned. Thankfully I tried different way to get the bolts in and it went in luckily because it didn’t bend much. So maybe they should ship it with some sort of support so it doesn’t bend so easily. Overall I am happy with the product and hopefully it will hold up when I use it. 4 stars because I haven’t used it and the product bend a little it that it was hard to get the bolts in place. 572297

I put this on a 2017 RAV4 LE Hybrid. As expected, I had to move the wings out to align with the bolt holes. You have to cut the plastic trim piece when installing on this model. For some reason, the bolts sent in the package did not fit in two of the holes. I had to use the bolts from the tie down bracket to complete the installation. Other than the bolt issue, this was a fairly simple install. If you can, have a second person help with holding the hitch in place. If no one is available, two cinder blocks with a scrap piece of 1x4 helps out. Use a 2x4 to lever the hitch up while under the car to bolt on. 537186

Measure it, smack it with a BIG dead blow hammer and measure again. Use Neverseize on the bolts. Do not need to remove hanger, just a longer extension on air gun. Not bad, floor jack or blocks help. :) 671330

2009 Toyota RAV4

Hitch only took a few days to receive. I have a 2009 Toyota Rav 4. I found it easier removing the outer 2 most exhaust hangers to make it easier to install the exhaust side. The hitch came just slightly bent, enough the bolt holes didn’t line up. Used a 3lb hammer to bend the driver side out a bit. After that, it was easy to install. I didn’t get the wiring harness because I only plan to use it for a bike rack. FYI - Saris Superclamp EX 2 fits and folds with the spare tire on the rear door. 668234

I installed Both the bumper and the trailer wiring harness, which Fit as advertised with little deviation from the instructions. Every thing worked fine. Do get the panel removal tools and watch the video several times before doing the actual install for both the bumper and Wiring. If this is the first time you have done this install on a given car, it does take longer than noted in the instructions. I would expect that if I ever do this again for the same car that the second time would be much faster. Good Product! 655801

2003 Toyota RAV4

Yes my receiver hitch came quite quickly. It only cost me $75 to have it installed at the local trailer rental place that does that sort of thing. You might even consider putting a note to that affect in with the installation paperwork. I am very happy with the quality of my new receiver hitch. Thank you very much 606915

2010 Toyota RAV4

arrived very quickly. well made, i did have to sledge hammer the mounting flanges a half inch wider as some buyers have noted. no big deal. main problem i had was not with the hitch at all. car came from minnesota and the rust in the already existing threaded holes didn't come out with my fiber brush- i didn't have a wire version. if i had to do it over again i would spend ten bucks and get a tap (12mmx1.25 i believe) and clean them out. one of the bolts above the exhaust went in crooked and i just muscled it in. it will probably never come out again but why would it need to? 601182

Ask the Experts about this etrailer Trailer Hitch
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Can Trailer Hitch be Installed on 2017 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
  • According to the online owner's manual for the 2017 Toyota RAV4, Toyota does not recommend installing a trailer hitch on the RAV4 only if it is the SE model. This particular model vehicle is simply not designed to tow even a light trailer or support the weight of any hitch mounted accessory like a bike rack or cargo carrier. I do recommend verifying this information in your copy of the owner's manual. If you don't have the SE model, then the owner's manual does not list any restrictions...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2018 Toyota RAV4 Adventure
  • The etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98864 referenced in your question is confirmed to fit the Adventure sub model of your 2018 Toyota RAV4. The hitch is designed so that the receiver portion will sit just below the rear bumper and won't protrude through the fascia like you described. Because of where it attaches to the frame modifying it so that it does go through the fascia won't be possible. I have attached an image to assist. There is not an aftermarket hitch available that will...

  • Trailer Hitch, Wiring and Brake Controller for 2018 Toyota RAV4
  • The trailer hitch I highly recommend for your 2018 Toyota RAV4 is the etrailer.com Trailer Hitch # E98864 because it is a bolt-on installation that does not require any drilling into your Toyota's frame. This Class III, 2" trailer hitch has a black powder coat finish to protect it from corrosion and also has a 3,500 lb towing capacity and 525 lb tongue weight capacity - perfect for a small camper. If your RAV4 uses a hands-free liftgate, this trailer hitch will even allow you to maintain...

  • Best Hitch Bike Rack Recommendation for 2018 Toyota RAV4
  • For your 2018 Toyota RAV4 with a hitch installed like the etrailer.com hitch part # E98864 installed I really like the Saris Freedom Superclamp bike rack part # SA4025F. This is a lightweight platform bike rack that only touches the bike at the tires and only weighs 30 lbs. The biggest drawback to platform bike racks has always been the weight of them, but with this rack you get the best of both worlds. The preferred attachment style with the lighter weight. Platform bike racks are also...

  • What is Weight of etrailer.com Hitch # E98864
  • The total weight of the etrailer.com hitch part # E98864 is 34 lbs. For comparison purposes the Class I Curt hitch part # C12108 instead weighs 27 lbs. A 7 lb difference would not make any difference in fuel mileage and since the 2 inch hitch size has more accessories made for it this would be the way to go.

  • Can Hollywood Sport Rider SE2 2-Electric Bike Rack Fold Up When Used With 2012 Toyota RAV4
  • We do have options for bike racks that will work for you, though the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE2 2 Electric Bike Rack # HR1450Z-E you asked about will not be able to fold up when installed on a 2012 Toyota RAV4, and it would be cutting it close in regards to interference with the spare tire. The reason for that is the rack measures 5 inches from the hitch to the closest part of the rack when folded up and the spare tire measures approximately 6-1/2 inches from the face of the hitch...

The two attached pictures show either size. The white vehicle is a 2 inch and the blue is 1-1/4 inch.
