Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Installation - 2006 Honda Ridgeline

Today in our 2006 Honda Ridgeline we're gonna be installing Draw Tite's class three two inch trailer hitch receiver. And this is what our hitch is gonna look like once it's installed. You are gonna be able to see the cross tube down below the bumper as well as the receiver here at the back. It's a class three two inch by two inch receiver. So it's gonna be great for all of your towing needs from bike racks to cargo carries to trailers, it should handle just about everything. It utilizes a 5/8 inch hitch pin and clip.

Now one doesn't come included with the hitch but you can pick one up here at etrailer.com.Additionally the small hole just rearward of our hitch pin hole, allows the use of a J-pin. A J-pin works similarly as a hitch pin and clip as it slides through the hole but has a small hooked end that'll poke through this small hole here and press against whatever's in your receiver holding it tight, acting as an anti-rattle device. It utilizes plate style safety chain loops. They've got a fairly large opening so it should accommodate most safety chains. It features a 750 pound tongue weight and that's the force going down on top of the receiver and a 5,000 pound gross towing capacity, and that's how much it can pull behind it. If you're using a weight distribution system your tongue weight will remain the same but your gross towing capacity's gonna increase to 7,500 pounds.

You do wanna verify in your vehicles owners manual that you don't exceed any of its towing capacities. Now I've got some measurements for you to help you when deciding on accessories. From the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube it measure about 16 1/2 inches. This is important when determining if you need to drop, rise or raise inaudible 00:01:31 any of your accessories. And from the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the rear bumper it measure about four inches. This is important when determining if any of your holding accessories can be placed in the upright storage position without contacting the bumper. We'll begin our installation at the back of the vehicle by dropping our exhaust down.

We'll begin by putting a strap in place to catch our exhaust to make sure that we don't cause any damage to it when we're lowering it down. So we're just gonna put that on there and bring it up and that'll catch it. Now we can remove our exhaust hangers. There's one here at the far rear on our muffler. We're gonna spray down the hanger itself there with some lubricant to make it easier to pry those off.

And then we're just gonna take our pry bar here, we're just gonna pop that rubber piece off. There's another hanger toward the front side of the muffler, we're gonna need to remove that. Now that our exhaust is lose, we can pull it down out of the way. We're gonna remove our heat shield that's just above it. There's gonna be four bolts we need to remove with a 10mm socket. We'll now pull our heat shield out and set it aside. We'll now take some spray lubricant and each of the weld nuts on the bottom of the frame. There's gonna be three on each side. And we're gonna clean it out with a bristled brush. If you need a bristled brush you can pick one up here at etrailer.com. Doing this will make it easier to install all the bolts into our weld nuts here. 'Cause we don't want the to get caught up and lock up so we can't get the nuts in there. There's also two on the inside of our bumper beam here. We're gonna spray those and clean those as well. We'll now take each of our bolts and place a conical tooth washer on them with the teeth facing away from the head of the bolt. You're gonna have six of the thicker bolts here and you're going to have two of the thinner, smaller bolts. Check your conical tooth washers because the opening for the bolt is gonna be smaller on two of them for the smaller hardware. Now with an extra set of hands we're gonna get our hitch into position. We gotta get up over our exhaust first. And then we'll just line up our hitch with the holes in the bottom of our frame. Take the larger bolts that we prepared and thread those into the factory weld nuts. Once you get one bolt started on each side, the hitch will hold itself up, making it easier to install the rest of your hardware. The smaller bolts that come with your hitch are gonna go into these two holes here. I've already got one threaded in there. I'm just gonna thread that in there. Now we can go back and tighten down all of our hardware. We'll tighten down the bolts in the frame with a 19mm socket. The bolts that go into our bumper we're gonna tighten down with a 17mm socket. And now we can torque all of our hardware to the specifications found in our instructions. We can now put our heat shield back in place and reinstall all the bolts. Once your heat shield's back in place you just need to slip your hangers back on your exhaust and you can take your strap out of the way. You're now ready to hook up your trailer and hit the road. And that completes our installation of Draw Tite's class three two inch trailer hitch receiver on our 2006 Honda Ridgeline.

2 suggestions: 1. Before installation, use WD40 and nylon brushes to clean all eight bolt holes/threads on the Ridgeline so that the bolts will turn in easily. 2. If the holes on the hitch don't line up with the holes on the Ridgeline, the center piece of the hitch may need bent back a little. Use a large mallet hammer to bend slightly, providing more play to align all the holes. Easy install otherwise. 595143

Hitch itself is high quality and solidly made. However, when I took it out of the box it had several scratches and scraps that made it look like someone may have previously attempted to install. Another issue was the mounting hardware was in the receiver with plastic over and I thought it wasn't included. A call to Customer Service resolved that. The hitch install was straight forward and the video was helpful. However, the fit up was not exact and the hitch was racked out of square. I had to use a screw driver as a drift pin to line up the hitch and frame holes on each side. This made tightening some of the bolts pretty challenging at times. Once the hitch was drawn closer to the frame it did square up and finish was easy. I would strongly recommend using a thread tap if your vehicle is not brand new. I started with WD-40 and a small plastic brush and couldn't get any of the bolts more than 1/3 in. Some PB Blaster and a tap to chase the threads made a world of difference. Time to install hitch and wiring harness was about 2 hours. Final installation looks very clean. 113891

Great hitch. Excellent price. I use this hitch for my personal use as well as hauling equipment for the volunteer fire co I am involved in. No problem installing. Very easy. All bolts and hardware line right up. Was installed in about 1/2 hour. 576291

The workmanship was very nice continuous flowing welds. paint was complete and no runs, decals were were properly placed. The two bolt tab that bolted to the bumper structure had to be bent back an 1/8" with a two pound maul. We used an ATV jack to lift the center in place while we each held up a side and started all the bolts, and once all bolts were on, tightened them down with a torque wrench as in the directions. Installing the hitch took about two hours. The shipping box was handy to lay on in the driveway, once we pulled out the staples and spread it out. It was solidly built, a professional job and a nice addition to my Ridgeline pickup. 610038

While this hitch is sturdy and built well, it is not necessarily well built. During installation, wiggling the hitch into the tight confines of my 2006 Honda Ridgeline, was not too difficult. What was difficult was getting the holes to line up. The first problem was that after getting two bolts engages on the driver's side, the passenger side holes were nowhere near aligning. I realized that the center support was preventing the passenger side bracket from moving into the proper position. After wrangling the hitch out from under the truck, I inspected the it. The center plate was still square as it should be, but I did have to smack it a couple times to bend it to clear. After wrestling the hitch back under the truck, I realized that the elongated holes where not elongated in the right direction, making them useless for adjustment. Once I finally did get the bolts into the holes, I then noticed that the center plate wasn't even close to aligning with the holes. Seriously!!!! 638830

Install tips: 1. Make sure you have a good wire brush and/or thread tapper to clean threads of older car. 2. If holes are a bit off, a round punch or screwdriver might help bend the hitch enough to get bolts in. 3. It's a tight fit width wise to get the hitch up into place, so some jiggling and two people are helpful. The most time consuming part for me was cleaning out the old holes and driving the bolts in to clean up the threads. The first time I put the hitch in place the holes were about 1/4 inch off, and the plate at the back was preventing me from moving it into place. We took it off, and I noticed that the back plate was a tiny bit off square. I beat the plate with a hammer a few times, which bent it about 1/16 to 1/8 inch, then we put it back on the car. It still needed to be pushed into place over the holes. I had a round punch from a cheap Harbor freight chisel set, and that worked very well. Another users comment about using a screwdriver as a drift pin was helpful. 455024

This product was very poorly inspected by the manufacturer, the weld on the plate that attaches the (2) smaller bolts to the back of the truck was way, way off making installation impossible. If it wasn’t for my persistent mechanic having to open up the holes on the six bolts that attaches underneath to make it fit, I would have returned it. Very disappointed, took over two hours to make it fit. 697594

This thing was misaligned at the center plate, and also at one end. The mounting holes were off by at least 1/4 inch. If you don't have tools , it wont work. I had to bore out the hole to get it to line up to the vehicle. we also had to bend the center plate to get the alignment to work. Took 5 tries bringing down, drilling, putting it back up. There is zero precision. However, we have a trip in the next couple of days and returning neither guaranteed that we would get one that on time and that it was better than this. OEM needs to pay better attention to QC and measurements. that enter plate was welded 1/4 off. That and the misalignment at the ends, made me bore out the holes. Good thing I do metal work. Good luck. Took about 2 hours. The box arrived pretty trashed, and scratches on the hitch. That is a don't care for me, its a hitch. However, they did not sand blast the metal prior to powder and any thing that will hit this will chip off the powder. I am just pointing out facts, I would buy it again. its pretty solid once installed. I would recommend they would provide grade 8 hardware. 680240

Comments
Based on your photos, the trailer hitch appears to have been welded incorrectly - which caused your center plate bolt holes to be off by approximately 1/4 inch. Making modifications to a trailer hitch is strongly discouraged as it can compromise the integrity of the hitch. An incorrectly welded bracket would fall under a warranty issue.

To add a 7-way trailer connector to your 2007 Honda Ridgeline our # ETBC7 kit will do exactly what you want. It's intended for electric brake controllers but not having a controller connected won't hurt anything. And if you install the # ETBC7 you'll already have everything you need to add a controller later. Another option is to install the adapter, part # 37185, that is included with the # ETBC7 kit and not connect the other three wires. This way you'll have a 7-way connector but...
