Perfect for Boat Trailers

Kodiak disc brakes installed on a trailer

If you tow a boat trailer, live in a coastal area, or experience a lot of snow, slush, and salt on the roads, you know how corrosive salt and water can be. Because disc brakes last longer than drum brakes, you should consider how things like rust might impact your trailer over time.

The Dacromet coating on these brakes offers great corrosion protection, even with frequent use in freshwater and saltwater. It can withstand 300 to 400 hours of continual exposure to salt spray before corrosion begins, which is comparable to galvanized steel. So - unless you're driving your trailer through water for 2 weeks straight with no chance for the brakes to dry - it'll be a while before any rust starts to form.

Get a Safer, More Comfortable Ride

Say goodbye to the days of your truck being pushed and pulled by your trailer. Disc brakes provide a safer, more comfortable ride than drum brakes. They offer shorter stopping distances and deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds. So, you won't have to worry about things crashing around in your trailer or camper next time you reach unexpected traffic on the highway or debate if you can actually stop before that yellow light turns red.

Save Time and Money

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes. Not only do disc brakes provide more controlled braking than drum brakes, but they also save you money by having fewer parts to maintain.

diagram comparing the number of parts in drum brakes and disc brakes

Unlike drum brakes, which have springs, magnets, and shoes that may need to be continually adjusted or replaced, disc brakes are virtually maintenance-free. There are no springs, cables, or other little components that you'll need to worry about failing.

disc brake caliper and brake pad

The brake pads will naturally wear down, so eventually you'll have to replace them. But these pads are also way easier to replace than drum brake shoes. The caliper - where the pads are housed - is located on the outside of the brake assembly. This means you just have to remove that one part to replace the brake pads rather than having to remove the entire assembly like you would with drum brakes.

close up view of vented rotor

This particular kit can save you time and money over other disc brakes on the market as well. A slip-on rotor may be easier to install initially, but water can find its way between the rotor and your existing hub, causing uneven rotor wear or runout. With a 1-piece hub-and-rotor assembly, water and debris can't get in to cause any corrosion or contamination.

In addition, vented rotors, like these, disperse heat faster than non-vented rotors. When brakes retain heat, they are more likely to experience brake fade, or loss of braking power. So even if you take your boat or camper out every weekend, these trailer brakes will continue to offer excellent performance throughout their long life.

mounting bracket supporting disc brake

Kodiak disc brakes have a unique caliper mounting bracket as well. The side-support design puts all of the weight on the mounting bracket instead of on the bolts. This reduces premature wear and extends the life of the bolts, further ensuring optimal performance.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

If you want to remount your existing wheels after installing these brakes, you'll need a kit that offers the same bolt pattern. To determine the bolt pattern, count the number of bolt holes (or lug nuts) on your trailer's wheel. This will give you the first number in the pattern. To find the second number, just measure the distance between a bolt hole and the bolt hole across from it.

diagram showing how to measure even bolt pattern

For example on wheels with an even number of bolt holes: 6 on 5-1/2" means 6 bolt holes with 5-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the center of the hole across from it.

diagram showing how to measure odd bolt pattern

And with an odd number of bolt holes: 5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the farthest edge of one of the 2 farthest bolt holes.

Video Transcript for Complete Breakdown of the Kodiak Disc Brakes

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this Kodiak 13-inch hub and rotor disc brake assembly set. This is gonna allow you to upgrade your trailer from drum breaks to disc brakes so that you can get all the benefits that come along with having disc brakes, including the superior performance that they provide. So this set is going to allow you to upgrade a single Dexter axle with an 8,000 pound capacity and the number 42 spindles. Our rotors are 13 inches in diameter, and as you can see, we have the 8 on 6 1/2 inch bolt pattern, so these are gonna work for your wheels that are 16 inches and larger. Our hub and rotors, our calipers and our mounting brackets all have a Dacromet finish that's gonna offer excellent rust and corrosion resistance with a 300 to 400-hour salt-spray rating, so these are gonna be great for your boat trailers and trailers that are used in coastal areas or that come in contact with heavily treated roads and that sort of thing.

So if you are going to be in those sort of environments, these are gonna hold up really well for you. If you're looking at your good, better, best as far as your trailer breaks go with those finishes, I'd say the only thing better than these is going to be just a stainless steel construction. But as far as finishes go, the Dacromet is gonna hold up really well and do a good job for you. So upgrading your trailer from drum breaks to disc brakes is going to have several benefits as far as performance goes. It's going to dramatically shorten your stopping distance.

It's also going to give you a much smoother, more controlled ride so you're not going to experience that push and pull that you're probably used to when you're pulling your trailer that has the drum brakes. We do have the ceramic brake pads here that are going to help increase your stopping power. There's also a large 2 1/2 inch diameter stainless steel piston here that provides fast responsive braking, so it is gonna be a much better performing break for you. And in addition to better performance, these are also going to require less maintenance, so it is gonna save you time and money over the long run. Having that one piece hub and rotor assembly is gonna reduce the chance of uneven rotor wear.

We also have the vented design here on the side that's gonna help dissipate heat faster to prevent premature brake pad wear. And all around these are a nice high-quality automotive grade construction, so they are gonna be very long lasting, help save you money in that way as well. The caveat that comes with upgrading to disc brakes is that disc brakes do require a higher line pressure than your drum brakes, so you are going to need to make sure you have a brake actuator and brake lines that are rated for 1,500 psi or higher in order to activate your drum or your disc brakes here. Now, obviously, those are not included in this kit. We do sell them separately here at etrailer.com.

But if you don't already have them, you will need to pick those up. But this kit will provide the two cast iron hub and rotor assemblies with the eight 5/8 inch diameter pre-installed wheel bolts on each. You're also going to get 16 of these 5/8 inch zinc-plated steel lug nuts to make sure that your wheel stays in place. You'll get the two cast iron calipers as well as the two ductile iron caliper mounting brackets. And so these do have the four bolt brake flange configuration, so it is gonna be very easy to get these mounted on your axle. I do want to point out that just for display purposes, I have these mounted on top for balance and whatnot. When you actually go to install these, you will be mounting them on the side, and that side support design puts all the weight on the mounting bracket itself instead of on the bolts, so it's gonna reduce the strain on the bolts, help them last longer. You are gonna get four of these stainless steel caliper mounting bolts with this kit. Our inner and outer races are pre-installed, and so those are included as well. And then you're going to get your inner and outer bearings to make sure everything's moving smoothly for us. And then this kit is an oil lubricated system, and so you'll get your two oil seals for the inside, your two oil caps for the outside, and then one 8 ounce bottle of synthetic bearing oil to make sure that everything's running smoothly inside there. So again, upgrading to disc brakes is gonna improve your performance, reduce your maintenance and having that Dacromet finish is going to make sure that these are nice long lasting option for you. So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching.
